CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

1.1 Introduction

Often most television station are snubbed not because of death of ideas, personal or technical know-how but because of lack of concept of aesthetics applied to such television media outfit. Lack of interest among audience members about certain programmes is due to inability of such programmes  to satisfy to thirst.

In the wake of intense competition today, the audiences enjoy the luxury of switching to other station channels or even turning off the set as the case may be.

Therefore, once a programme does not take meaning due to loss of aesthetic value, the media in question falls easy prey.

Elements of aesthetics on television programme include a lot of variables such as the design where both the anchor man and the interviewees are seen. The clothes that are wore by the personalities involved, their gestures and perhaps the way the camera turns directly to the people concerned.

To say that the major goals of any communication activity is to influence the consciousness and behavior of the message encoder and decoder responds with feedback to the sender is just to say the obvious. What some people may not find very obvious but which is, is that special devise are employed in communication to stimulate imagination through the senses with the ultimate aim of attracting and sustaining attention to the messages being conveyed. This is what is known in professional parlance as aesthetics. Janet Paul (1994) gives more bite to this when she says:

Any aesthetics work is to appeal to or sensitize any or a combination of our senses or taste. Every aesthetic work must cause people to feel and experience what the artist has felt and experienced. As soon as the listeners or viewing or even expectations are affected by the same feelings which the artist felt,  experience has been clarified and intensified, thus aesthetic communication has been experienced.

There are many elements that are employed to bring aesthetics in media production but for our purpose here, television here will suffice.

Television production makes use of mood, human voices, time and sound effects; again television production makes use of light, sound, time, motion and space. All these elements if employed professionally will result into excellent and products which will attract marvels form even the most critical of listeners or viewers.

In this study we shall bring to perspective the rational, objectives and significance of the study. Not left out is the theory on which the pices is anchored on the proper use of aesthetics in television medium of which a large audience of viewers are involved.

 

1.2    Statement of Problems

The non application of aesthetics on television programmes is one of the most perplexing problems in the media industry. Mot government owned television houses faced with inadequate funding. Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) channel 12, Uyo under takes functions of broadcasting and presentation of news. These are specific news gather and editor are in tell as specific news broadcasters who  involved in daily reading of news. Generally, as professional broadcasters you are expected to read news  fluently to achieve effectively code the message through the right channel in order to justify it use. While in Akwa Ibom State broadcasting corporation AKBC in Uyo, their national broadcasting commission (NBC) the agency of movement as set up to supervise broadcasting in thee country. Which they have also formulated a  code of ethics which is intended to enhance programme standard such as code is indispensable  in the current broadcasting climate, which will make broadcasting realize its objectives in the country.

Secondly, some television houses have not improved on their television programme presentation. This could be attributed to poor funding or insufficient fund on their profession
