CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

Culture is the evolution of man and man itself cannot exist without culture. The relationship between the media and cultural institution is another important aspect of the institutional linkage in the society. The media are important in the production and transmission of culture. In their study of communication practices and problems in all religions of the world, mass communication is the major carrier of culture and that the mass media are culture fare and shape the cultural experience of many millions of people in the modern world.

Culture has to do with people’s way of life. “culture can be defined as the total way of life of a people while values which are intrinsic or unconscious, form basic of all behavioural decisions they make”.

Culture as that whole complex which includes knowledge, morals religion custom and habits in any other capabilities acquired by man as a member of society.  Thus, culture as a people’s way of life embodies such intangible concepts as values, attitudes and beliefs as well as material objects and possessions acquired by such people.

Going through Taylor’s concept it could be agreed that the media are informative in terms of cultural development project. Since they are able to focus on such development, the broadcast media do have variety of programmes on cultural development projects they present to its audience. On this aspect audience have wide range opportunities and listen at the historical perspective of culture norms of Nigeria irrespective of their ideologies.

In Akwa Ibom State, both NTA and AKBC Television have made frantic efforts earmark media programme and cultural projects to suit the views of Akwa Ibomite. They have done that by portraying the existing cultural heritage of the people.

The media have also gone to some extent to trace the cultural ideologies of Akwa Ibomites thereby making them to be known publicly and recording them through broadcast documentation. It could also be found that the media have gone beyond their frontiers thereby trying to exhibit documentary approach in order to always educate and cover major cultural events showcased in different communities.

  • Statement of the Problem

The broadcast media have many occasions presented programmes on the cultural development.

Even though it is so has the content of these cultural development programmes, reflected our true beliefs? On this note it could also be said that focus been done on a little basis on media programmes and cultural development.

This study seeks to have a closer view in order to proffer solutions for its effective programmes on culture development.
