IT IS FINISHED

INTRODUCTION

This word “it is finished” is the expression by Jesus Himself of what St. John expressed by saying, “Jesus knowing that all things were now finished, that scripture shall be fulfilled.

One of these sayings was spoken from the cross, the other from the throne. The speaker of the both is the same. In the one, His voice then shook the earth “ as rending rock testified. In the other, His voice will shake not he earth only but also heave for a new heaven and a new earth accompanied the proclamation.

In the one, like some traveler ready to depart, Jesus looked back over his life’s work and knowing that it was accomplished, summoned His servant, died and departed. Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished said “I thirst “ and then it is finished”. That is to say, there is something in that dying voice a great deal deeper and more wonderful than ordinary hum utterance with which a dying man may say, “it is all over now”, I have done, for this utterance came from the consciousness that all things had been accomplished by Him, and that He had done His Life’s work.

But this man said it is finished and gave up the ghost. Now if we ponder on what lies in that consciousness of completion, I think we find mainly the following:

CHRIST RENDERED A COMPLETE OBEDIENCE

All through His life we see Him hearing from the inward ear the solemn voice of the father, and  responding to it with that “I must” which runs through all His days, from the earliest dawning of consciousness when He startled His mother’s will “ I must be about my father’s business”, until the very last moments.

In the midst of his career, He said, “ I do always the thing that please Him, and nobody then or since has been able to lay his finger upon an act of Him in which, either by excess or defect or contrariety, the will of God has been fully represented. At the beginning of His career He said, in an answer to the Baptist’s remonstrance “ it becometh  us to fulfill all righteous! And at the end of His career, He looked back and knowing that He had thus, done what became His- namely-fulfilled it. He said “it is finished”

CHRISTS CONSCIOUSNESS OF HAVING COMPLETED THE REVELATION OF GOD

Jesus Christ has made known the father and the generation since have added nothing to His revelation. In the cause of His career, he said, He that had seen me, hath seen Father; and looking back on His life manifestation of God. He proclaimed. “ it is finished! And the world has since, with all its thinking, added nothing to the name which Christ has declare.

THE UTTERANCE FURTHER EXPRESSES HIS CONSCIOUSNESS OF HAVING MADE A COMPLETE ATONING SACRIFICE

Brethren, I know of no expression of these word’s which does justice to both the elements that are intentioned so intimated in them except the old one, which listen to Him as they come from His quivering lips, and says ‘the lord hath made to meet on Him the iniquity of us all!

THE COMPLETION OF THE WORK WHICH BEGAN ON HE CROSS

It is done! That lies, no man knows how far ahead of us. As surely as astronomous tell us that all this universe is hastening towards a central points, so surely that far-all divine event; is that, to which the whole creation moves. It is the blaze of light which fill the distant end of he dim vista of human history. The perfect fellowship of human with the divine, the housing of one in the very home and heart of God; a new heaven and a new earth; a renovated universe, the removal of all evil, suffering, sorrow, sin and tears. These things are to be, shall be, when He said “it is finished”

EXEGETICAL FROM GREEK TESTAMETN

Literally translated, the word tetelestal means “it is finished”; the word occurs in John 19:28 and 19:30 and these are the only places in the New Testament where it occurs. In 19:28 it is translated “After this, when Jesus knew that all things were now Completed; in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, he said, “I thirst”. Two verse later, He utters the word Himself “Then when he received the sour wine Jesus Said, ‘it is finished”, and bowed his head and gave up His Spirit:

It is finished which can also be translated “paid in full”! Three words in English, One work in Greek—-

In Latin Tetelastea is rendered with two words “consumatum est” (it is consummated). It is a perfect tens e of the verb Teles which  is derived from Tehos which mean “to end” that is complete, execute, conclude, discharge (a debt)- accomplish, make an end, expire, fill up, finish go over, pay in full, perform, a goal achieved, a consummation, a result attained.

It means to bring something to a successful end or to its intended or destined goal. It does not mean just to complete a task but to carry it out fully, to bring it to the finish or to perfection. It follows that Jesus cry of TELELESTAC is a word of finality.

The idea is “it is finished, it stand finished, and it Always will be finished:

  1. His work of redemption is complete and nothing needs to be or cab be added to it. Sin is atoned for Heb. 9:12 “ neither by the blood of goats or calves, but by His own Blood……. Having obtained eternal redemption for us”, Heb. 10:12
  2. Satan is defeated and rendered powerless (Heb. 2: 14-15 “—that through death he might destroy him that had the power over death, that is the devil…….”, 1 John 3; 8 “…….. the son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
  3. Every requirement of the law has been satisfied and God’s Holy wrath against sin has been satisfied (or propitiated) Rom. 3:25 “ Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood…..” Heb 2:17, 1 John 2:2 “ and He is the propitiation for our sin ….also for the sin of the whole word”

1 John 4:10. Redemption
