CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Olaniyan and Ojo (2008:23) posited that the need for improved productivity has become universally and that it depends on the effective and efficient training is not less apparent. It has further become necessary in  view of advancement in modern world to invest in training this is the role play by staff training cannot be overemphasized. Training is a systematic development of knowledge, skills and attitude require by employees to perform adequately on a given job or task to job. New entrances into the organization have various skills though not all are relevant to organizational needs. Training and development the required for staff to enable them work toward taking the organization to it expected destination.

Human resource, are the most valuable asset of any organization and even the money, nothing get done without manpower. Abiodum (1999: 278) submitted that training is a systematic development of knowledge, skills and attitudes requires by employees to performed adequately on a given task or job. It can takes place in a number of ways on the job or off the job. In the organization or outside the organization. Adeniyi (1995: 145) in his view observed that staff training and development is a work activity that can make a very significant contribution on the overall effectiveness and profitability of an organization. It follow therefore that for the employees is an organization to perform their duties and make meaningful contribution to the success of the organization goals needed to acquire the relevant skills and knowledge.

 

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Many organization faces with the challenges of unproductivity despite the number of staff they have. Resources that would have been utilized effectively are either wasted or underutilized because of the absence of needed training and skill needed for the job. The consequence of these includes financial losses retarded organization all growth and general unproductivity. It is in the view of these array of problem that this research study is carry out to examining  manpower training and development as a tools for enhancing employee performance.

1.3     OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The objective of the study seeks:

  1. To examine the role of manpower training and development as a tool for enhancing employee performance.
  2. To show case the importance of manpower training and development for effective performance.
  3. To access the challenge of manpower training and development for effective performance
  4. To examine the ways to overcome the challenge of manpower training and development for enhancing employee performance.

1.4     RESEARCH QUESTIONS

To achieve the objectives of the study the following research questions were formulated:

  1. What is the role of manpower and development for enhancing employee performance?
  2. What is the important of manpower training and development for enhancing the employee performance?
  3. What are the challenges of manpower training employee performance?
  4. What are to overcome the challenges of manpower training and development for enhancing employee performance?

1.5     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Its significance is that it will bring to light the relevance of manpower training and development as a tool for enhancing employee performance. It will show case the need for organization to be more productive by developing their staff through  effective training to boost up the overall productivity in addition, the study will also provide solutions to the challenges in carrying out manpower training and development. The research study will also be of significance to other researcher that is seeking for information on the subject.

1.6     SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This research study in limited to NIPOST, Uyo  alone where the researcher want to find out manpower training and development as a tool in enhancing  employees performance.

1.7     LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The following limitations are inherent in the study. The researcher in the process of gathering information and relevant facts faced some naturally and man-made constraints such as seeking for information on the subject. The research study is limited to NIPOST the following limitations are inherent in the study.

Time factor owing to the fact that this study is carried out within the time the researcher is battling in her semester work. She could not have enough time to gather some information and materials reached for the work at its disposal. Lack of finance the researcher as a student still depends mostly on the goodwill of the parents and sponsors for the finance. As a result of these resources available at its disposal for the research work is not enough. It therefore handicapped her for getting access to all reached material for the study.

Material resources the researcher find it difficult to reached some textbook, journal, thesis to carried out the work, due to inability of the researcher to cope with timer and finance to carry out the time assign task. Human element this study has some human elements this study has some human element, and such cannot said to be perfect. It base on the concept reasonable assurance, despite the existing limitation of the study, the researcher assumes all the information obtains is the best of her knowledge.

 

 

1.8     DEFINITION OF TERMS

Manpower: This refers to manpower in term of the number of people available or needed to do something.

Training: This is the process of teaching or learning a skill or job.

Developing: The process of changing and becoming larger stronger or more impressive, successful or advance or causing somebody or something do change in this way.

Employee: A paid worker

Performance: Working effectiveness the way in which somebody does a job judged by its effectiveness.
