THE IMPACT OF GOOD TEACHERS ON OUR LEARNING ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT ON THE PERFORMANCE OF STUDENT IN TERTIARY INSTITUTION

THE IMPACT OF GOOD TEACHERS ON OUR LEARNING ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT ON THE PERFORMANCE OF STUDENT IN TERTIARY INSTITUTION

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The core business of schools is to provide students with a rich learning environment that is open, respectful, caring and safe. This ideal learning environment comprises of good and qualified teachers, student and other vital academic facilities.

According to Elendu, (2012) Good teachers are people dedicated to the education of students in their classrooms and to the institutions in which they work.

Basically, a good teacher is a provider of knowledge and insight, a mentor one who inspires, motivates and opens up minds to the endless possibilities of which one can achieve one who makes a positive difference in the lives of many one, who is admired appreciated and held in the highest esteem.

According to Hassay, (2011) Academic learning environment can be seen as an environment suitable or conducive for academic purposes.

It is the diverse physical locations, contexts, and cultures in which students learn. Since students may learn in a wide variety of selling such as outside of school location and outdoor environments, the tern is often used as a more accurate or preferred alternative to classroom, which has more limited and traditional connotations. Educators may also argue that learning environment have both a direct and indirect influence on student learning including their engagement in what is being taught, their motivation to learn and their sense of well being belonging and personal safely. For example, learning environment filled with sunlight and stimulating educational materials would likely be considered more conductive to learning than drab spaces without windows or decoration, as would schools with fewer incidences of misbehavior, disorder, bullying and illegal activity.

Performance of student in tertiary institution in this case refers to how well a student meets standards set out by an institution, itself or an external examination body either set up by the government or an independent outfit signifies success or good performances.

According to Elendu, (2012) education is one aspect of socio-cultural plan which form the central pillar of development socially, politically, culturally and technologically without education development is at a stand-still and the resources of the will not be managed properly.

The only people that can forces the needed skills for sustainable economic growth are the enlightened populace. Rapid population growth leads to increase in school enrollment. At the moment, the school themselves are not only few in number but lack of good infrastructure like textbooks, libraries and qualified teachers impede our educational system.

George (2013) education in Nigeria is an instrument of effective national development it has witnessed active participation by non-government agencies, communities and individual as well as government.

It is therefore desirable for the nation to spell out in clear and unequivocal terms the philosophy and objective that underline its investment in education. The nation policy on education is seek to reveal that  (National policy on Education 4th edition, 2012) 58 policy were formulated that education states the  tertiary education, secondary education, university, college of  education, polytechnics and monotechnics.

According to Luke (2012) education plays a key role in providing individuals with the knowledge skills and competence needed to participate effectively in society and in the economy.

In the wise subsection 59 of National policy on education spell out the following:

  1. Contribution to national development through high level manpower training.
  2. Development and inculcate proper value for the survival of the individual and society.
  3. Develop the intellectual capacity of individual to understand and appreciate their local and external environment.
  4. Acquire both physical and intellectual skills that enable the individual to be self reliant and useful to the society.
  5. Promotes and encourage scholarship and community services.
  6. Foster and cement national unity
  7. Promote national and international understanding and interaction.

Sub-section (10) section (8) of national policy on education spell out how tertiary education shall purse their goals and how it may be achieved through;

  • Teaching
  • Research and development
  • Generation and dissemination of knowledge
  • Verily of mode of programmes of full time, part time block release, day release.
  • Access to training (funds such as those provided by the individual training fund (ITF).
  • Student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES).
  • Maintenance of minimum education standard through appropriate agencies of internal government and alignment of programme with societal need to win opportunities.

According to Hassay (2004) teacher’s role must be to create solution in which students can learn on their own matter than provide package information to student.

In other to foster proficiency in our academic environment class participation in the teaching learning process should be uppermost in teacher methodology. This is a good teacher, gearing towards better student performance; you should be guided by “Premark principle” in modifying student’s undeniable behaviours. It involves the use of students high frequency behaviour (repeated occurring behaviour to boost or increase or unforced allow frequency behaviour less pufeued activity)

According to Bolton (2011) teacher should apply the principle of shaping in his teaching/learning process. That is to reward bits or approximation of behaviour close to the terminal one expected of the student.

To foster good performance on the student, the teacher should always revised previous work briefly before starting the new one. An individualized instruction should be used to meet the points of each student mental readiness it is close to popular statement of moving from known to unknown. A teacher might tell his student that from today they must always solve five mathematical problems, correctly before they go out to play football, if the teacher has found out that the student like playing football too much and lack interest for their studies by so doing the zeal to go out to play will unforced solving problems in the course.

According to Udilt (2013), Teacher plays a pivotal role in any academic institution as its concerns the performance of the student in the stand learning environment.

The effect of learning usually asses shy performance result in acquisition of new capabilities learned from the teacher. Hence individual can exhibits various forms of capabilities in varying intensity and extensity. One fact about learning one thing lends itself in learning another. Individual can be seen as bee hire of consolidated capabilities which help them to learn other things.

According to George (2012), learning state that it is difficult to find any learning which starts from the scarlet without a good instruction although learning itself is a complex process which takes place in different forms and occasions.

In education theory hold important dimensions to teaching learning endeavours and therefore perusable certain operational practices for the environment which is teaching and learning process is carried out for better performance of student instructions should be tailored to student developmental levels. Which is normally reflected in the syllabus in which subject matter or topics are graded to meet the development levels of the students that is to say that a particular topic can be taught at junior and senior level, but in the tertiary level, by this implication teachers is expected to use language within the comprehension level of student during instruction.

According to Luke (2004), teacher should teach for discovery learning as well as reception learning depending on the nature of the subject this to emphasize the relevance of student participation in class activities and this participation is necessary for discovery and exception learning

Furthermore, in enhancing the performance of students in our academic environment teachers should provide materials of moderate difficulty to the student in other to stimulate their intellectual resources and facilitate movement from one level of functioning to another higher level. Teachers should observe that exposing student to cheap and easy materials is not to their advantage; materials for student should contain items of varying difficulty.

Teachers should teach in such a manners that will create insight in student. This can be achieved by helping the student see the relationship between various parts of any problem and stimulating them to solve the problem. In order to impact knowledge to the student teachers should say more emphases on the very important aspects of any subject matter. This will make a better understanding of the topic by the student. They are different types of private organization but this study centers on Uyo City Polytechnic, Nduetong Oku, Uyo.

1.2     STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Before now, tertiary institution  such as Uyo City Polytechnic have been faced with some challenge in which it affect the performance of the students this  include;

  1. Poor Environment: Environment is any place where an organization is located, good environment determines the result of student while that of student determine the productivity standard of the organization. It is a noted that any organization or tertiary institution that do not have good environment plan to have few people in the organization when whether is not, many students may have interest of coming to read in the nights but when environment is not conducive or no power supply in the organization or classroom will affect the result of the performance of the student.
  2. Lack of Practical: It is expected of tertiary institution to expose student to practical aspect of any cause. It obvious that any student that is not sound and also not expose to the practical aspect of the course may not do it well.
  3. Incompetent Lecturer: The duty of a lecturer is to impact knowledge on a student, so doing any lecturer that is not sound enough qualify or undergoes proper training will not know what to do which will affect student from performing well. The input of a lecturer determines the output of a student will that as student determines standard good performance in tertiary institution.
  4. Inadequate Classroom: Classroom is a place where lecturers are carryout or knowledge are transferred. A student jumping from one place to the other will not get everything properly from a lecturer, sufficient classroom determine proper attention and arrangement of notebook in the class. The researcher concern is to bring good environment. Proper practical and competent lecturer in tertiary institution as well as Uyo City Polytechnic.

1.3     PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study

  1. To identify if good teachers contribute to the performance of student in Uyo City Polytechnic.
  2. To identify if practical exposes the student to better understanding in Uyo City Polytechnic.
  3. To research if lecturers contribute to the failure of student in tertiary institution as well as Uyo City Polytechnic.
  4. To examine if inadequate classroom contribute to the failure of students in Uyo City Polytechnic.
  5. To determine if there is any relationship between good teachers and the performance of student in Uyo City Polytechnic.

1.4     RESEARCH QUESTIONS

In order to scientifically carryout this study, the following higher question were asked.

  1. Does good teacher improve the performance of student in Uyo City Polytechnic?
  2. Is there any significant relationship between good teachers and effectiveness of student in Uyo City Polytechnic?
