CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the Study

The concept of industrial relation denotes the relationship between the employees and the management in the day to day running of an industrial. According to (ILO) International Labour Organization industrial relations deal with either relationship between the state, employees and/or the workers organization or the relationship between the occupational organizations themselves.

The objective of industrial relations is to maintain industrial democracy based on participation of labour in the management of industry to raise productivity by reducing tendency of high labour turnover and absenteeism; to ensure workers participation in management of the company by giving a fair say in decision making and training policy; to establish a proper channel of communication  between the management and the workers, to safeguard the interest of the labour as well as management by securing the highest level of mutual understanding and goodwill between all sections in an industry, to avoid all forms of industrial conflicts so as to ensure industrial peace by providing better living and working standard for the workers. To bring about government control over such industrial units which are running at a loss for protecting the livelihood of the employees.

1.2   Statement of the Problem

The failure of public organizations like Akwa Ibom International Airport was predicted on the challenges they faced.

Since the commencement of flight operation in September, 2009, the Airport has been run on generator. The State has witnessed the worst type of capital flight and bore faced corruption by the concessioning of diesel supply to ALCON Nig Ltd for the 24 hours running of the generators. Million of naira is spent on diesel purchases and purchase of generator.

How poorly paid Akwa Ibom Airport workers shutdown power, force Arik Plane to return to Abuja on September 20, 2016.

1.3   Objective of the Study

  1. To identify causes of industrial conflict in Akwa Ibom International Airport.
  2. To identify the industrial relation strategies of Akwa Ibom International Airport.
  • To access the impact of those strategies on the growth and development of Akwa Ibom International Airport.
  1. To identify the problem faced by Akwa Ibom International Airport in the direction.

1.4   Significant of the Study

This study is however significant in the sense that it will be of immense benefit to the management and staff of Akwa Ibom International Airport, Akwa Ibom State as well as business. It will be useful to other researchers who may which to carryout research on similar topic as a source of reference. The study will be of enormous help to whoever that seek solution to problem on industrial relation on organizational growth and development.

The study is important to government and every public and private official in order to maintain good industrial relation and how appropriate time period to apply industrial relation strategies to bring about growth and development in their organization or business. It will help management in industrial planning and conflict resolution purposes. The study is useful generally to every one to always review and learn modern industrial relation and how it impact and affect organizational growth and development.

1.5   Research Questions

  1. Does industrial relation contribute to the growth and development?
  2. Does the organization suffer low productivity due to lack of industrial relation strategies?
  • Does management consider industrial relation strategies in decision and policy making?
  1. Is there any critical relationship between industrial relation and organization productivity?
  2. Is there any means and need to foster industrial relation and it strategies in order to bring more productivity in an organization?
    • Research Hypothesis
  1. Null Hypothesis: Industrial relation does not contribute to the growth and development.

Alternative Hypothesis: Industrial relations contribute to growth and development.

  1. Ho: There is no significance relationship between industrial relations and organizational growth and development.

Hi:   There is significance relationship between industrial relation and organizational development.

1.7   Delimitation or Scope of the Study

This study was conducted within the premises of Akwa Ibom International Airport, Okobo, Akwa Ibom State. It focus was on the impact of industrial relation on organizational growth and development. In this study the research deliberately restricted the scope of the work for convenience reasons where as more variable or factors sustain the impact of industrial relation, hence attainment of organizational objective and efficient work performance.

1.7   Limitation of the Study

In this study and the course of putting it together, the researcher encounters numerous constraints in the course of his findings. One of the constraints from the researcher was;

Information: There was a serious problem of meeting up with scheduled appointment in getting every necessary information that will help the researcher in carrying out this project, as they complained seriously about their crowed or busy programmes and work in their offices. This affected the researcher a great deed. Moreover, the fact of the study by the nature of the research situation itself limited the researcher’s scope of generalization e.g. respondent attitude on questionnaire.

Time Constraint: Due to method use in data findings, the primary and secondary source of data collection most time is required an effort spent in getting the necessary information.

Transportation and Finance: To carry out a project research does not demand getting information only, but they needed money to enable the researcher reach out to materials, journals and all necessary transportation made demand finance cost.

 

 

 

1.8   Definition of Terms

For the purpose of clarity, accurate interpretation and understanding, it was necessary to define the following terms as used within the context of this study.

Industrial Relation: The system, rule and procedures used by union and employers to determine the reward for effort and other condition of employment and their employers and regulate the ways in which employers treat their employees (Armstrong 1984). It is also the relationship and interaction that exist between employee’s workers trade union and employer’s management.

Organization: A system of consciously coordinated activities or force of two or more persons (Bernard, 1995).

Growth: The process of growing physically, mentally or emotionally.  Okun, B. (1995) Economic Development. New York Holt Remehart and Wington.

Employee: A person who is employed and paid to work for something. Yesufu T. M (2000) The Human Factory in
