ABSTRACT

Before the establishment of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in the 1970s. Nigeria experienced an economic boom which led to increase in vehicular traffic on Nigerian roads. This increase in both vehicular and human traffic led to incessant road traffic crashes in Nigeria. Many people continued to be victims and casualties of road traffic crashes because only few understood the principles of road safety. The study relied on both primary and secondary sources. It is observed that the economic and political importance of the FRSC cannot be overemphasized. The information has revealed that there is positive relationship between motivation and performance of the corp. In February 1988, the Federal Military Government under retired General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida established the Federal Road Safety Commission to arrest the increasing rate of road traffic crashes on Nigerian roads and bring sanity to both Federal and State roads. This study discusses the historical establishment of the FRSC Commission, powers of members of the Corps, some of the achievements recorded by the Corps since its inception, and also some of the challenges facing the Corps.
