THE ROLE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN RURAL DEVELOPMENT INBEKWARA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF CROSS RIVER STATE

ABSTRACT

The main objective of this study was to determine the role of Local Government in Rural Development: A case study of Bekwara Local Government Area, Cross River State . To achieve the objective of this study, four null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A total of 400 respondents were randomly selected for the study from the research area. A self constructed questionnaire titled role of local government in rural development questionnaire (RLGRDQ) was designed to collect data from the respondents. To ascertained the reliability of the items, test-retest was used. The research design adopted for the was survey design. The hypotheses were analyzed using Chi-square X2 and tested at 0.05 level of significance with 9 degree of freedom. The result revealed that Bekwara Local Government Council, inadequate skilled workers and inadequate funding by both Cross River State and the Federal Government bears a significant implication on rural development in Bekwara Local Government of Cross River State . It was recommended among others that Bekwara Local Government Area should be prudent in the management of council resources to provide amenities to its citizenry.
