ABSTRACT
In order to promote national integration and reduce cost of managing separate elections, it became pertinent that a permanent and impartial Election Management Body (EMB) be established to conduct elections in Nigeria. This study attempts to assess the history of Nigerian Electoral Commission from 1959-1979. The study is focused on the history of the electoral body, in order to understand the challenges facing the present electoral commission and to suggest means of tackling the problems of the past so as to conduct free and fair elections in Nigeria. The research specifically considers Electoral Commission of Nigeria (ECN) 1959, Federal Electoral Commission (FEC) 1964 and the Federal Electoral Commission (FEDECO) of 1979. The interdisciplinary approach was adopted for the study. Archival and library materials were supplemented with source materials from the field. It was recommended among others that the Nigerian government should ensure total independence of the electoral commission in order to have smooth running of elections in Nigeria.
