CHAPTER ONE

1.0   INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

This study focuses its attention on academic performance of boarders and non-boarders in some selected secondary school in Odeda Local Government of Ogun State like Salawu Abiola Comprehensive High School, Osiele, Abeokuta and Stephen Centre College, Aregbe Abeokuta.

Fajana (2001) defined boarding house as a private house where people or students can pay for accommodation and meals during the term or semester. It is a general view or beliefs of the people from the time, that students in boarding schools do performed better in their academic study or activities than non-boarders. Some people hold their view because of the following reasons.

First and foremost, there is the view that only parents that are financially sound send their children to boarding schools on like Salawu Abiola Comprehensive High School and Stephen Centre College. They also belief that the occupation of the parent determines the school they would take their children to whether to boarding school or day school.

In another way, some parents were transferred from one place of work to another and such parents would need to transfer their children to another school in that new area which can affect the academic performance of the children.

Secondly, people have general notion that boarding school is very conducive for learning teaching and they are more equipped than that of day schools. Boarders are well organised because there is time for everything they want to do. There is time to read, eat and for prep. Also there is punctuality among the student and teachers. Boarders are well disciplined. They also have strong view that the boarding authorities normally conduct prep for their students after the school closing hour which could boost or enhance academic performance of their students while day students might not have such opportunity and this can affect their performances in their academics some of non-boarders from long distance came late to school and before such student could reach school he or she might have missed one or two periods.
