ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to assess AKBC Radio programme “Safe Motherhood” and Exclusive Breastfeeding among Mothers in Oron Local Government. The objectives of the study were mainly to know whether mothers in Oron Local Government Area listens to the AKBC programme “safe motherhood”, to ascertain the extent of influence AKBC radio programme “Safe Motherhood” and exclusive breastfeeding among mothers in Oron Local Government Area and to know the contribution of the AKBC radio programme “Safe Motherhood” and exclusive breastfeeding to mothers in Oron Local Government Area.  A survey method was used for the study and the questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. A sample size of 384 respondents was used through a systematic random sampling.  The research reveals that majority of the mothers in Oron do not have access to the radio set and as such do not listen to AKBC radio while those that claim to have a radio sets says they do not have time to listen to the radio because they are mainly traders and are always busy in the markers, it was 300 of the respondents that agreed that they sometimes listen to the programmes but all the respondents claimed to be aware of exclusive breastfeeding citing the health care centres and midwives to play significant role in their awareness. The research concludes that breastfeeding awareness campaign can be achieved in Oron through the adoption of other means of communication. The research however recommends that there is need to educate, nurses, doctors and midwives on the concept of exclusive breastfeeding because they had the major influence in persuading mothers to adopt a change of behaviour towards exclusive breastfeeding, that there is need to take the campaign to the market place since majority of the mothers in Oron are traders, and also, there is need to adopt other channels of communication like mass/group rally with the use of churches, schools, market places and other appropriate strategies that will cut across all nooks and crannies of the local government.
