CHAPTER ONE

                                               INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background to the Study

Public relation has grown in dynamics and practice as well as it entire scope on daily basis. It application pervades all aspects of our socio-economic life. It is so important that it is unfortunate that relative little is known about its true as it is practiced in our country.

The meaning is not yet clearly understood, not only by the general public but also, in many cases, by management of various organizations. However, this does not diminish its importance in a world characterized by inter-dependence yet split by changes and recording issues of confrontations.

Udoma K. (2001) however says that the literature of public relations practice is filled within variety of identifications, some lack universality in meaning while others are too broad. Many institutions may define it as it “ought to be” from that own perception and not as often as it is. He continues that:

Public relations (PR) is a field concerned

with maintaining a  public image for business,

non-profit organizations or high  profile people

such as celebrities and  politicians.

An earlier definition of public relations  by the first world assembly of public relations associations held  in Maxico City in August 1978 was “the art and social science of analyzing   trends, predicting their consequences, counseling organizational  leaders and implementing planned programs of actions which will serves both the organization and the public interest. It also embraces the practice of managing communication between an organization and its publics.

According to Nimidia Berson (2006:16):

Public relations provide an organizational or individual with an exposure to that audience using topics of public and  news items that provided a third party endorsement.

He continues that its  common activities include speaking at conferences, working with the media, crisis communication, social media, crisis communication, social media engagement and employee communication. Public relations according to Mvemek (1918) are used to  build rapport with employees, institution, inventors,  voters or the general public. Almost any organization that has a  stake in how it portrayed in the public arena employees some level of public relations. There are a number of public relations falling under that banner of corporate communication such as Anallst relations, media relations, investor relations, internal communications and labour relations.

In capturing  the true essence of public relations, Daniel (2004) says that people actually depend  on one another for satisfaction of their  economic and social needs, even as business depend for their existence and survival on the goodwill of people just as people depend  on business and other organizations or institutions for satisfaction of their needs. thus in recognition of this reliance and then needs for establishing a deliberate, planned, executed and sustained programmed for public interests, public relations is the considered imperative.

Through numerous well designed public relations programmed, organizations or institutions strive to secure mutual understanding, acceptance and goodwill. Therefore, in assessing the functionality of public relations and its practice in organization one is billed to ascertain the  essence of goodwill and mutual understanding in an organization. in essence, organization  have come to recognize that the understanding and  goodwill of people are very essential to their very existence, hence  the formation of public relation policies and programme in both profit and non profit organization.
