AN ASSESSMENT OF SELECT BROADCAST MEDIA PROGRAMMES ON CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT OF AKWA IBOM STATE (A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE NTA CHANNEL 12 UYO AND AKBC TELEVISION)

ABSTRACT

An intensive investigation was carried on the Media Programmes and Cultural Development Programmes in Akwa Ibom State with references to NTA Channel 12 Uyo and AKBC television. This research which was content analytical dealt with 178 issues. Study’s finding revealed that NTA channel 12 Uyo devoted lesser time in presenting cultural development programmes in Akwa Ibom State and channel 12 Uyo coverage was not too high. Based on that study’s recommendations were; more time should be devoted by NTA channel 12 Uyo on cultural development programme in Akwa Ibom State, then the quality coverage should be high and more researches should be done in order to bring out the aesthetics of the programmes.

  1. Background to the Study

Culture is the evolution of man and man itself cannot exist without culture. The relationship between the media and cultural institution is another important aspect of the institutional linkage in the society. The media are important in the production and transmission of culture. In their study of communication practices and problems in all religions of the world, mass communication is the major carrier of culture and that the mass media are culture fare and shape the cultural experience of many millions of people in the modern world.

          Culture has to do with people’s way of life. “culture can be defined as the total way of life of a people while values which are intrinsic or unconscious, form basic of all behavioural decisions they make”.

Culture as that whole complex which includes knowledge, morals religion custom and habits in any other capabilities acquired by man as a member of society.  Thus, culture as a people’s way of life embodies such intangible concepts as values, attitudes and beliefs as well as material objects and possessions acquired by such people.
