CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

          Poverty is a state or condition in which a person or community lacks the financial resources and essentials for a minimum standard of living. Poverty-stricken people and families might go without proper housing, clean water, healthy food and medical attention, etc. It therefore means that it is necessary for a Christian to at least understand poverty as we are moving towards.

This project gives a due to the existence of poverty in a Christian life and effect so far if the readers attentively read this project, it can help you overcome most of the obstacle.

          One thing that is powerful irrupting into the consciousness of every Nigerian is the awareness that in all that we perceive and understand, express and project we ourselves are very much involved together with our religious belief and practice every religious, tradition is made up certain beliefs, norms for ethical conducts and rituals,which make for a harmonious living. The truth is that in Nigeria, there is a grave disparity between luxurious wealth and poverty. The contrast between luxurious wealth and extreme poverty, which often invade public and professional life dominated by the idol of wealth.

          Thus in this project we try to suggest ways in which the church in Nigeria can handle the problem of poverty to reflect the social concern of Christ to the Jews of his day. This will help to make religion relevant to the people and their situation.We concentrate mainly in Christian approach to poverty, which is the thorn in the flesh of Nigerian society today. The first part of this project tries to defines who are the poor, followed by suggested Christian approach to poverty and option for rich Christians in our society. The next part of the project is devoted to the reflection of “the goodnews for the poor” in the Bible. It is hoped that the suggestion made in this project will help Christians to handle some of the practical issues affecting our society today.

1.2 Statement of Problem

          The increase of poverty in our society has brought calamity and great fears in Christian life.Therefore, the purpose of this research is to examine the Christian approach to poverty in AkwaIbom State using Assemblies of God as a casestudy.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

This study intends to examine the Christian approach to poverty in AkwaIbom State.

The main objectives of the study include:  

  1. To examine the role of the Church in poverty alleviation inthe society
  2. To assess the way the Church will contribute to the welfare of the society in which the church is built.
  3. To examine the Christian response to poor members when they need help from the church.
  4. To examine what advise should be given to a memberinorder to adopt the needfulness of helping the poor person
