THE ROLES OF CHRISTIAN MISSIONARIES IN PROMOTING ART MUSIC IN SCHOOLS (EDUCATION PROJECT TOPICS AND MATERIALS)
ABSTRACT
This is based on the roles of Christian missionary in promoting art music in Government College, Ibadan. In this work, the researcher has made use of schools and selected pupils for the purpose of the study. Questionnaires were administered collected and analysed using percentage. Finally, the study revealed that primary school pupils have positive roles in promoting art music.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Art music of serious in text, composed and performed in the idiom of European classical music by formally trained musicians in conservatories, music institutions and universities as opposed to folk or popular music.
The role of the church in promoting art music was quite significant, the church which comprised such denomination as the church missionary society (C.M.S) now renamed Nigerian Anglican Communion, The Roman Catholic mission, The Methodist, Wesly. Presbyterian and Baptist Mission did three things in promoting western music in Nigeria.
They raised church and school choirs from their respective schools to sing at church services, masses and other religious activities. Their repertoire covered such areas as church chants, Gregorians chants, hymns, anthems, vesicles, vespers, Cantata, Canticles, German, Chorales, Psalms, motets, oratorios and spirituals as well as organ music.
Some experienced members of the choirs who showed greater interest, talent and leadership qualities may be trained as choir masters and organists, the church provide the enabling environment for organizing concerts of European church music through their school. The schools would organize seasonal musical concerts and religious plays to mark the season Christmas, Easter e.t.c many talented musicians emerged from these schools.
