ABSTRACT
The quantitative phytochemical analysis of leaves and peel of unripe Carica papaya were carried out using standard procedures. The phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and cyanogenic glycosides in variable amount. The leave contained 2.52 ± 0.0212%, 0.74 ± 0.0141%, 6.36 ± 0.1555%, 46.58 ± 0.0565% and 69.77 ± 0.0848% of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponin, tannin and cyanogenic glycosides while the unripe peel contained alkaloid (3.72 ± 0.04959%), saponin (1.28 ± 0.0424%), flavonoid (4.38 ± 0.1766%), Tannins (35.38 ± 0.0.0282mg/100g), and cyanogenic glycosides (89.34± 0.0282%) respectively. The significance of this result is that the distribution of phytochemicals in the Carica papaya depends on the plant parts and their presence suggests the therapeutic and medical values of the plant. It is therefore recommended that the epicarp (peels) of fruits such as pawpaw should be blended alongside the fruit and consumed.
