CHAPTER ONE

1.0  INTRODUCTION

A good number step is normally taken in getting the appropriate resources required in a modern design based information system. The successful installation of such a system and admission require proper institutional activities for automation. The system must accept student information, and it must bring about a number of benefits to the institution.

In addition, the hardware and software combination must be compatible. The polytechnics admission looks on all aspects of an institution system, its student and department. Fallowing the appreciation of western education by more Nigerians after the civil war, mere institution sprang up this was further encouraged by favorable government educational polices. Earlier, most high schools and collages were converted into degree warding universities. As the guest increased however mere schools where given higher school status and also given mandate to award diplomas and certificates.  These set of high schools were/are identified as polytechnics and universities and federal government owns some while state government owns some.

In the late seventies, admission of students into different field of study in these universities and polytechnics were not cumbersome and the staff designated had few applications, to attend to and also had clear cuts requirements that make the work easier.

There was also simple education system that further took care of some of today applicants’ curiosity that tends to make the admission work tedious.

By the early eighties, the awareness for western education grows up and the school system become complex and created room for relaxed polices. Conditions were also added to requirement which further increased the number of qualified applicants. This increase and attending differences in admission requirement for different students make the admission process complex and cumbersome. Now, there are inferences where the admission officers have to battle with large personal database of applicants, deference government educational polices allowing for different admission requirements and consideration. An example of such is a less developed state, where by a student is coming from an educational less developed state scheme (ELDS). All these differences call for caulicle different data management (DM) for possible and easy references.

1.1  RIVERS STATE POLYTECHNIC BORI ADMISSION PROCESS

Rivers State Polytechnic Bori, the admission system is a process whereby candidates who went to enroll in courses offered in any of these institutes are screened by their qualifications such as credentials presented by candidates.

From introduction, the process of admission into any higher institution in this country (Nigeria) is lasting, or taking too long and not interesting, boring, especially, the Rivers State Polytechnic has to deal with tens of thousands application forms and it falls in the category if institutions which there system is tedious. It is therefore, fast, flexible, and reliable means of processing be introduced in the admission system in Rivers State Polytechnic. The solution is to computerizing the present admission system used in Rivpoly using a computerized admission system abuse of admission or admission malpractice will be reduced to a maximum or it will be completely eradicated.

1.2  STATE OF PROBLEM

Computerization is all about providing a computer or computers to store information. Computerized database, pro9vides it when needed in these days computerization is becoming attractive, pleasant, and highly desired interesting. Therefore, Rivers State Polytechnic Bori cannot be far away from many fields of human endeavors these days.

The task is to examine the manual system of admission of the institution, analysis and detect the problem.

In looking at important of computers to an admission system in Rivers State Polytechnic Bori, this project shall be guided by the following question:

  • What are the defects of the manual management information system
  • What are the cases of these defects in an admission process of the institution
  • What are the possible areas of computerization of the institution on admission system?

1.3  OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

This project is to identify the retrogression associated with working without computer in the admission office of the Rivers State Polytechnic Bori. Hence approach aimed at achieving to the following objectives:

  • To analyze the best possible alternative in which computer can be utilized in the preparation of admission master list
  • To reduce to the barest minimum the time, lab our and cost in curried in processing the applications manually before the admission list is finally published.
  • Finally, to attempt eliminating completely, the manual method of sort listing of candidates into the polytechnic.

1.4. SCOPE OF THE PROJECT STUDY

The project is concerned with the introduction of the use of computer in the admission system which comprise of the following school.

1.5  GENERAL CONSIDERATION FOR ADMISSION INTO THE INSTITUTION

The structured of Rivers State Polytechnic is to run the school system which comprise of the following schools.

  • School of management sciences
  • School of applied science
  • School of engineering
  • School of foundation studies
