ABSTRACT

This study investigated the relationship between school facilities and students’ academic performance in social studies in Akamkpa local government area, Cross Rive State. To achieve the specific purposes of the study, four research questions and four null hypotheses were formulated. Relevant literature were reviewed from various sources in accordance with the variables of the study. Correlational research design was adopted. The population constituted 5,300 Junior Secondary School Two (JSS II) students. A sample of 200 students was selected and used for the study. Two instruments such as school facilities rating scale (SFRS) and Social Studies Performance Test (SSPT) were constructed by the researcher for data collection. The instruments were validated by four experts and a reliability index of 0.78 was established using test-retest method. Simple percentage was used to analyse the demographic data of respondents. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient was used to test the four hypotheses. Each of the hypotheses was conducted at .05 level of significance and the results showed that there was a significant relationship between library facilities, school building, (teaching, aids, recreational facilities and students’ academic performance in social studies. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that government should establish resource centres in every school to ensure that there is availability and utilization of school facilities.
