CHAPTER ONE

1.0   INTRODUCTION

Transportation has been in existence right from creation. Without transportation, movement from one place to another would be difficult.

Transportation is the movement of people and goods from one place to another. In ancient times, the movement of people and goods were done using donkeys, horses, ox etc. Human labour was also implemented in carry bulky goods. With the aid of technology, transportation has been modified and has greatly improved, become cheaper and even efficient. One can now travel distance of over 500km within a stipulated period of time compared to the use of animals.

In the ancient days, land and water transportation was the basic route of move form one place to another but with the advent of technology, transportation by air is now available. This achievement is as a result of modern technology which is computer aided. The sosoliso airlines which stared operation in July 2000 was established for the purpose of conveying humans and goods to their various destinations for the benefit and satisfaction of travelers and also for the safety and comfort of travelers (passengers).

1.1   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The passengers manifest was developed when lots of accidents were recorded in Nigeria. A manifest needs the dispatch and general information about a passenger routes to generate optimal transportation resource.

Lack of management and good passengers manifest modules has become a big problem in sosoliso airline. As a result, the airline have not been able to present reasonable information about a particular passenger when something happens along the way. Lack of passengers manifest algorithm has led to inadequate resource manifest. Route data can not be imported in form of ASCII files. There is no data import wizard that will guide users through a set up process for importing route data in the system. There is lack of data view to enable users to sort the route base on different criteria (route i.d), departure time, etc.

1.2   OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The aim and objective of this research work is to come up with a more suitable manifesting system in sosoliso Airline Company. A computer base manifesting system that can eliminate completely the above mentioned problems using a computer system. For instance, to come up with a manifesting system that can generate optimal airplanes and pilots manifest for a given dispatching scenario. Generally, the new system should be able to eradicate the problem of the existing system and improve.

1.3   SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The main purpose of this work is to design, develop and implement a viable software system which will be adopted by sosoliso airline and any other airline company that deals on transporting human beings from one place to another and consequently requires the whole information about each passenger that will board the plane.

1.4   SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This project work covers every area of passengers’ manifest that will help for future reference in case of any incident. This tool provides an estimate of required number of passengers and pilots for a particular dispatching scenario.

LIMITATION

In the case of this study, the researcher encountered some difficulties. Some of which are:

  1. TIME CONSTRAINTS: Managing time was really a major issue. It was really difficult coping with classwork, assignments and project work at the same time.
  2. MATERIALS: The materials gathered for this project material was located at different places. It was a major task accessing these materials.

1.5   HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This research work takes a look at the application of a computerized passenger manifest information system in sosoliso Airline Company. The sosoliso airline company was founded in 1994 and started operation in July 2010. Sosoliso airline was a scheduled, domestic passenger airline. Originally, its head office was on the grounds of Enugu Airport in Enugu.
