ABSTRACT

Maintenance is work that is done regularly to keep a machine, building, or piece of equipment in good condition and working order   The purpose of this study is to computerize the turn around maintenance information system (A case study of NBC – Enugu) and to develop a computer package, whereby the techniques observed from the manual method can be improved upon.  It is a known fact that the manual method of turn around maintenance information system has been associated with lots of inaccuracy in turn around maintenance information system.  This has led to some set back that has cost some obstruction on some parts, when in service.

The software, when developed will facilitate and enhance the more and methods of turn around maintenance information system which enables accuracy and also saves time when services and rendered.

There is no intention here, to treat modules separately, hence the entire project is menu driven, to cover most of the facilities present.

Lastly, it is optimistic that at the end of going through the work, one should be able to;

  1. Have a clear idea of the project
  2. Improve it to suit other organization with regard to other sources and problems.
  3. Know what it achieves.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

A Turn around maintenance information system, or TAMIS, is a key part of the supply chain and primarily aims to control the movement and storage of materials within a Maintenance and process the associated transactions, including shipping, receiving, put away and picking. The systems also direct and optimize stock put away based on real-time information about the status of bin utilization.

Turn around maintenance information systems often utilize Auto ID Data Capture (AIDC) technology, such as barcode scanners, mobile computers, wireless LANs and potentially Radio-frequency identification (RFID) to efficiently monitor the flow of products. Once data has been collected, there is either a batch synchronization with, or a real-time wireless transmission to a central database. The database can then provide useful reports about the status of goods in the Maintenance.

In its simplest form, the TAMIS can data track products during the production process and act as an interpreter and message buffer between existing ERP and TAMIS systems. Maintenance Management is not just managing within the boundaries of a Maintenance today, it is much wider and goes beyond the physical boundaries. Inventory management,inventory planning, cost management, IT applications & communication technology to be used are all related to Maintenance management. The container storage, loading and unloading are also covered by Maintenance management today.Maintenance management today is part of SCM and demand management. Even production management is to a great extent dependent on Maintenance management. Efficient Maintenance management gives a cutting edge to a retail chain distribution company. Maintenance management does not just start with receipt of material but it actually starts with actual initial planning when container design is made for a product. Maintenance design and process design within the Maintenance (e.g. Wave Picking) is also part of Maintenance management. Maintenance management is part of Logistics and SCM.

Maintenance Management monitors the progress of products through the Maintenance. It involves the physical Maintenance infrastructure, tracking systems, and communication between product stations.

Maintenance management deals with receipt, storage and movement of goods, normally finished goods, to intermediate storage locations or to final customer. In the multi-echelon model for distribution, there are levels of Maintenances, starting with the Central Maintenance(s), regional Maintenances services by the central Maintenances and retail Maintenances at the third level services by the regional Maintenances and so on. The objective of warehousing management is to help in optimal cost of timely order fulfillment by managing the resources economically. Maintenance management = “Management of storage of products and services rendered on the products within the four wall of a Maintenance”

1.1       BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Nigerian Breweries Plc, incorporated in 1946, is the pioneer and largest brewing company in Nigeria. Its first bottle of beer, STAR Lager, rolled off the bottling lines of its Lagos Brewery in June 1949. Other breweries were subsequently commissioned by the company, including Aba Brewery in 1957, Kaduna Brewery in 1963, and Ibadan Brewery in 1982. In September 1993, the company acquired its fifth brewery in Enugu state, and in October 2003, its sixth brewery, sited at Ama in Enugu. Ama Brewery is the largest brewery in Nigeria and one of the most modern worldwide. Operations at Enugu brewery were discontinued in 2004, leaving the company with five operational breweries.

The company has a portfolio of high-quality brands, including Star Lager Beer (launched in 1949); Gulder Lager Beer (1970); Maltina (1976), which now has three varieties, namely Maltina Classic, Maltina Strawberry, and Maltina with Pineapple; Maltina Sip-it (2005), which was packaged in Tetrapaks; Legend Extra Stout (1992); and Amstel Malta (1994). The company also relaunched Heineken Lager into the Nigerian market in June 1998.

Nigerian Breweries operates many related companies, including beverage-related manufacturing companies making corks, labels, bottles, packing crates; and a logistics network, including transport companies, warehousing companies and retail sales management. The company’s head offices are located in Lagos

1.2       STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The processing of billing papers for clearance of goods, with manual method has led to omission of many records that ought to be included.  This is caused by inaccuracy of the manual billing process.

Due to the inefficiency in manual billing process, billing papers are carried from post to post, waiting for who is in charge, thereby delaying the goods that suppose to be delivered.

More so, goods are not delivered on time, due to the fact, that goods that takes about two weeks to get into the country, still takes another two weeks to be cleared.
