CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

The motivation process is a need which creates a tension in the individuals who move in a certain direction in order to achieve the desired objective which reduces the tension. A satisfied need does not motivate; conversely. Unsatisfied need motivates. (Mitchell, 2010).

The process starts with a perceived need, then a tension is created which starts the motivating behaviour; then is a move towards the realization of the need, a good oriented behaviour. As soon as the need is satisfied, the tension relaxes. To motivate an employee, management must create real or imagined needs for the employee to aspire to. A real need could be a desire to achieve through promotion, increase in wages or enjoyment of increased organizational favour, such as company cars with a chauffeur. Imagined needs of a staff could be an aspiration to have coffee at 10.am. Which is the entitlement of successful executives, to have a secretary, have someone carry his brief case up-stairs, have some run into the office at the sound of the bell or visitors fill papers before they enter into his office. for the purpose of this discussion term such as need, desire, aspiration and drive are used interchangeably.
