Abstract

This study titled, “Determinants of POS Adoption in Modern Nigerian Shopping Malls” sought to evaluate factors for the adoption of Point of Sales (POS) Terminals as a means of payment by retail shoppers in Nigeria. The aim was to determine the influence of each of the identified factors on the POS adoption. The study adopted the descriptive research design, using the quantitative research approach in which data was generated using the questionnaire instrument. The population of the study consisted of the retail shoppers who use POS in modern Nigerian shopping malls. From this group, 384 respondents were selected for sampling using the purposive sampling technique. The Data were analyzed using Analysis of Moment Structure (AMOS), part of Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and generalized linear model (GLM) which combines multiple regression and multivariate analysis of variance.  The findings from the study revealed that perceived POS performance had a very significant positive influence on intention to use POS by the retail shoppers; perceived POS ease of use had a significant positive influence on intention to use POS by the retail shoppers; social factors influence had significant positive effect on intention to use POS by the retail shoppers; technical infrastructure had a significant positive effect on the usage of POS by the retail shoppers; trust in POS technology had a significant positive influence on the usage of POS by the retail shoppers. The relationship between the retail shoppers’ intention to use POS and their actual usage of POS was not significant. The findings from this research suggest that retail shoppers’ intention to use POS can be improved upon with an improvement in the POS perceived performance, improvement in POS perceived ease of use and improvement in social factors influence. The adoption of POS can be improved upon if technical infrastructure and trust in the POS technology is improved.
