DETERMINATION OF HEAVY METAL CONTENT OF Lasienthera africana

ABSTRACT

Lasienthera africana (Editan) leave was analyzed for its heavy metal contents using standard procedures.  The results of the heavy metal analysis were obtained as follows: Lead (0.04±0.00mg/Kg), Mercury (0.012±0.00 mg/Kg), Cadmium (0.033±0.06 mg/Kg), and Arsenic (0.0145±0.0007 mg/Kg). The trend of the heavy metals in this study followed the order; Pb > Cd > As > Hg. Comparison this results with EPA standards showed that the sample of Lasienthera africana used in this study was not contaminated by heavy metals as the levels of the all the heavy metals were below the EPA standards for human exposure. Hence, the plant is fit for consumption.
