CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Drug use is a universal phenomenal, the fact is that, student in institutions of higher learning in Nigeria constitute a priviledge class within the larger population. They are grouped with a sub-culture of their own which values and norms encourages deviance. For instance, majority of students in higher institution in our country belongs to age 18-25 years which is as “youth”. And moreso, the research makes us understand that 70% of them were involves in drug abuse. This research drug abuse as one of the undergraduates problem and decided to find solution to the problem.

Weldon (1986) define drug abuse as any chemical substances which when used affects the body and minds. It does this by changing the bodys function and or behaviour of the users.

Drug abuse according the Brown Colin and Money, Peter (1990) refers to inappropriate use of any drug. It can result in personal family health, social, legal and financial problem.

Drug abuse is the use of drug that occur too frequently in excessive amounts over a long period of time or in a wrong combination with other drugs.

A drug is abuse when:

  1. It is not medically necessary
  2. It is not recommend by a health workers
  3. Law forbid its use or it is socially unacceptable
  4. It is used excessively

Anti  social behaviour: This is the act that violate the law, social rules and the basic right of others. They include conduct intended to injure people or damage properties, illegal behaviour and deviance of generally accepted rule and authority such as truancy from school.

According to Atinuke (2009) anti social behaviour is the act of doing things in a wrong manner.

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The research is interested in finding solution to the problem which is the relationship between drug abuse and anti-social behaviour among selected undergraduate in Ogun State. (University of Agriculture, (UNAAB); Moshood Abiola Polytechnic MAPOLY , Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta, and

Olabisi Onabanjo university ago Iwoye. (Precisely).

  • Drug abuse renders addicts economically unproductive and dependent
  • Drug abuse increases in crime rate which may lead to insecurity to lives and properties
  • Drug abuse can leads to barrenness in women
  • It affects the central nervous system
  • Drug abuse can cause unrealistic assessment of dangers
  • Drug abuse can leads to neglect of personal hygiene
  • Drug abuse cause hallucinations
  • Drug abuse re-creates human being both physically and mentally behaviour
  • Nigeria moral value fade away under the intoxication of drug abuse
  • Alcohol and drug abuse enhance most of the anti social character embark upon by cultism.
