EFFECT OF ETHANOLIC LEAF EXTRACT OF Solanum torvum ON THE LIPID PROFILE OF MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE – TREATED
ALBINO WISTAR RATS

ABSTRACT

The effect of ethanolic leaf extract of Solanum torvum on the lipid profile of monosodium  glutamate – treated rats was investigated. Twenty (20) adult male Albino wister rats were used for the analysis. They were divided into four (4) groups of five rats each. Group I was the normal group and was fed with normal feed and water. Group II was the test control administered with (0.5g/kg) of monosodium glutamate, feed and water, Group III was administered with (250mg/kg) of the leaf extract and 0.5g/kg of monosodium glutamate, and Group IV administered with (500mg/kg) of the leaf extract and 0.5g/kg monosodium glutamate. The rats were housed and subjected to the feed, leaf extract, MSG and water, for 28 days after which they were sacrificed, after an overnight fast, and blood collected by cardiac puncture and used for serum preparation for subsequent analysis of the various parameters. There was no significant change (p > 0.05) in triacylglycerols and VLDL cholesterol in all the groups when compared with the normal and test groups. However, there were significant decreases (p < 0.05) in serum total cholesterol, HDL – cholesterol, and LDL – cholesterol in group 3 and group 4 when compared with the normal and test control. These shows that Solanum torvum leaf extract at the result doses administered may be able to modulate the lipid profile thereby ameliorating the effect of monosodium glutamate.
