CHAPTER ONE

  • INTRODUCTION

1.1                  BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Teaching is a systematic presentation of facts, ideas, skills and techniques to students. It is a composite activity, external and internal, to the classroom. Teaching and activities can be classified into two, viz a. Pre-active teaching activities. These involve actions embarked upon by teachers inside or outside the classroom. They are designed to facilitate teaching during classroom encounter.

Education generally is accepted as a major factor in the development of modern man. A part from being a major instrument in socialization and the enhancement of wellbeing of the individuals, education has played a vital function in the attainment and sustenance of national development and democracy. Okafor (1988) observed that “in the conditions of modern life, the rule is absolute and the race that does not value trained intelligence (personnel) is doomed”. For any nation to make appreciable effort in attainment of development, it has to commit substantial proportion of her resources to the provision of education. Okafor (1988) and Aboyi (2004) opined that “To be sure among the factor necessary for the solution of modern education and for ushering in and consolidation of contemporary development, the factor of education stands in a class by itself”. Education generally is aimed at producing intelligent, responsible and well-informed citizens who are capable of making positive contributions to the development and well-being of themselves and their society. The quest for any development nationally cannot be realized without a solid educational base. Education is the key upon which the developmental base of every nation hinges. It is the educational sector that produces the manpower that manages all aspects of the economy. It is on the teacher therefore that the task of managing students (trainee) rests. It therefore behoves on the teacher trainers to be properly trained and motivated to be able to do the job fine. This has not been the case with teaching in Nigeria due to neglect suffered by teacher trainers. This neglect too has led to brain drain in the teaching profession and has made it an all comer affair without regard for laid down rules and regulations. The brain-drain in our educational system, especially in tertiary institutions in Nigeria, has resulted in the production of half backed turn-out/products who in turn constitute into societal nuisance.
