EFFECTS OF CENTRAL BANK REGULATION AND SUPERVISION ON BANKING SECTOR IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF SELECTED BANKS IN UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE)

ABSTRACT

This research work examined the effect of regulation and supervision in banking sector in Nigeria, using selected banks in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, as a case study. To accomplish the research objective, the study adopted the survey design method while the Taro Yaman method was used to select (139) respondent as sample size for the study. Instrument for data collection was a self developed questionnaire and the forms are administered personally. They data collected were arrange in tables and analyzed using sample descriptive statistical method. findings  from the study revealed that the regulatory and the supervisory roles of central bank includes; to issue legal tender, promote monetary and sound financial environment, to act as bankers bank. The extent in which central bank performs are; its roles on banking system in Nigeria are; solving the problem of banks failure, formulating monetary and fiscal policies, safeguarding the economy and consumers protection. The activities of bank regulation and supervision are checking the circulation of money in the banking sector, providing payment and withdrawal facilities easy customers, taking measure to mitigate the tight liquidity conditions on the banking systems. Based on the findings, the following recommendation were made by the researcher; that the central bank of Nigeria should ensure good detection of fraud to enable them carryout effective regulation and supervision in banking sector in Nigeria.
