EFFECTS OF INDUSTRIAL ACCIDENTS AND SAFETY ON EMPLOYEE WELFARE CASE STUDY IS NIGERIA

Abstract

The focus of the research is on the impact of Industrial Accidents and Safety Management on employee well-being. The study’s particular goal is to determine the link between Industrial Accidents and Safety Management and employee wellbeing, as well as to identify the types of accidents that employees in the Nigerian manufacturing industry face and how they influence their well-being and productivity.

The research focuses on Industrial Accidents, Safety/Health Strategies, and Employee Wellbeing, as well as interactions between employees, customers, and management and how these effect employee welfare. To that purpose, a survey research methodology was used, with a sample size of 278 employees chosen at random for the study. The hypotheses were tested using the Pearson Moment correlation coefficient. The testing demonstrated that there are measures in place as well as employee wellbeing. It was advised that companies establish effective Industrial Accidents and Safety/Health plans management in order to safeguard their employees’ lives at work, decreasing employee turnover and improving employee welfare.

Introduction

1.1 Background of study

Employees and other persons who are affected by what the firm produces and does are protected by health and safety rules and programs from accidents that occur as a result of their employment or connections with the company (Armstrong, 2009). In people management, the necessity to ensure a safe working environment for employees has a long history. In Beer et alHRM .’s model, it is recognised that work systems can have long-term ramifications for individual well-being, ‘there is some evidence to show that work system design may have impacts on physical health, mental health, and duration of life itself. This understates the importance of safe and healthy work environments for employee health (Bratton and Gold, 1999).

Occupational safety and health (OSH) issues have existed since the dawn of human labor. As Europe’s industrial revolution unfolded in the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, the understanding that labor is hazardous to one’s life, safety, and health was stressed. The scope of occupational safety and health has increasingly expanded beyond job-related diseases and injuries to the nature of employment, the larger work environment, and worker well-being. Physiology, psychology, sociology, ergonomics, medicine, hygiene, work safety, toxicology, and epidemiology are just a few of the disciplines in occupational safety and health (Elgstrandand Petersson, 2009).

In the context of growing productivity and efficiency in manufacturing enterprises both in Nigeria and abroad, safety and quality remain essential considerations. Furthermore, the best practice of leading companies who are progressively integrating safety, health, and environmental management into their entire management system offers reason to believe that widespread adoption of the method will reverse various unfavorable tendencies (Saurin, 2002: 335348). Employers are required by safety, health, and environmental regulations, as well as particular guidelines, to create a safe work environment and to limit employee exposure to hazardous chemicals in order to safeguard their health.

The goal has always been to provide collective protection by limiting the discharge of the material at the source, preventing it from reaching the ambient air and becoming a health hazard (Evans, and Parkers, 2008 :12-1 7). We must have the essential information about the environment we work in in order to recognize this and other threats, since it is critical for us to be safety conscious in our everyday actions, especially in an industrial setting,(Kenyo, 1999:29).

Many of lives are lost each year, and thousands more are wounded or crippled as a result of accidents caused by carelessness, thoughtlessness, or a lack of concern. Safety is essentially a question of mutual care and respect for yourself, your coworkers, and the equipment you’ll be utilizing. A suit of amour would not be enough to shield you without this foundation (Harcourt, 1991: 155). Various literature on the subject of safety environment indicates that the safety environment in which a person finds himself has a significant impact on his life (Kadiri,2006:3).

In reality, psychologists have established that one of the two predictors of an individual’s personality is the safety environment (Onwueme, 1994: 32).

Furthermore, safety comes first, and it takes precedence over all other considerations. As a result, the most important attribute and value of environmental management is safety.

The capacity to maintain environmental safety will not be jeopardized. A project will not be completed if it cannot be done safely (Doe, 2006: 150).

The problem of workplace safety and its surrounds is garnering a lot of attention these days all across the world.Today’s world has a high proportion of industrial accidents, which are related with health issues, absenteeism, poor performance, and depression. Some professions are extremely hazardous, and the law mandates that every employer of labor maintain a safe working environment for people doing hazardous tasks (Fulton, 2008: 49). Everyone prefers to work in a physically secure and healthy atmosphere. Productivity will suffer if you are unwell. Employees are frequently unwell and absent from work, which might result in low morale. An dangerous and unhealthy workplace leads in decreased productivity for the company, as well as increased expenditures in the form of medical bills and disability payments. Employee performance is affected by the safety environment in either a favorable or bad way, (Kadiri, 2006:5).
