ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY AND THE FLOW OF CURRENT ON ENGINE OIL SAMPLES
CHAPTER ONE
- Introduction
Electrical resistivity is an important property of materials. Resistivity of a material is a fundamental physical property related to the ability of a material to conduct electricity. If R is the resistance of a block of conductive material having length L and cross sectional area A, then resistivity is given as ρ RA/L.
Resistivity measurement of the ground is normally made by infecting current through two current electrodes and measuring the resulting voltage at two potential electrodes.
Materials and their resistivity is as follows:
Material | Resistivity |
Sodium | 47.7 |
Lithium | 92.8 |
Calcium | 33.6 |
Potassium | 72.0 |
Beryllium | 35.6 |
Aluminum | 26.50 |
Magnesium | 43.90 |
Silver | 15.87 |
Gold | 22.14 |
Iron | 96.1 |
Electrical conductivity is the measure of how easily electricity flows through a material.
Simply, electricity is the movement of electron through A material. As electron move through a material, it comes into contact with atoms and the material collision Slows the electrons down. Each collision increases the resistivity of the material (Peter,2003) electrical resistivity also known as resistivity, specific electrical resistance or volume resistivity quantifies how strongly a given material opposes the flow of electric current.
Resistivity is a different concept to resistance, Resistivity values are used to compare the conductive properties of different materials.
The resistivity value of a specific material is a material constant and unlike resistance is independent of the dimensions of the same resistance (R) Which is measured in ohms (Ω) according to ohm’s law.
V = I/R = V/i
Where v = Voltage in volts
I = Current in amps
- Aim and Objective
The aim of this research is to determine the electrical resistivity of engine oil samples.
- Scope and Limitation
This research covers the electrical resistivity and the flow of current on Engine oil samples.
- Significance of the Study
The significance of this research is to determine the resistivity of four engine oil samples and to compare their values with that of other engine oil.
