ESTIMATION OF THE LEVEL OF SOME HEAVY METALS IN SUSPENDED PARTICULATE MATTER IN AMBIENT AIR OF MINI MARKET IN AKWA IBOM STATE POLYTECHNIC

ABSTRACT

The suspended particulate matter in the mini market, AkwaIbom state polytechnic was collected by gravimetric sampling technique for two (2) weeks and analyzed for the presence of Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Lead (Pb), Cobalt (Co), and Nickel (Ni) using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (A.A.S). The result of the analysis revealed the concentration of the metals in the following order; Cobalt (Co) > Cadmium (Cd) > Chromium (Cr) > Nickel (Ni) > Lead (Pb). The concentrations of all the metals were found to be above the WHO permissible limit for such metals in ambient air. Therefore, there is need for regular monitoring and control of the possible anthropogenic source of these metals in the study area to avoid human health risk due to daily inhalation.
