FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR MENTAL RETARDATION AMONG PERSONS WHO ARE MENTALLY RETARDED IN SPECIAL SCHOOL IN AKWA IBOM STATE

ABSTRACT

This research project is deal and concern with factors responsible for mental retardation among person who are mentally retarded in special school in Akwa Ibom State. The study examine it there was any relationship between age of the mother of mentally retarded child, intake of unprescribed drugs by mothers, X-ray radiation in pregnancy by mothers, prolonged labour of mother and the cause of mental retardation in the child. Questions were asked best the research questions. Research methods were conceptualized and systematic with arrangement. The methods of data analysis adopted in the study were; mean score and Pearson Product Moment Correlation in order to analysis the data appropriately. Finally, it was summarized from the beginning, conclusion was draw and conceptualized recommendations and references were made at the end of the study.

The discussion of findings presented have are based on the result obtained from the analysis of data. The study sought to determine where mental retardation in a child is cause by the mother’s characteristics. To guild this, four hypothesis were formulated and the result of findings would be presented based on each of the hypothesis as follows:

Hypothesis One: There is no significant relationship between the age of the mother of a mentally retarded child and the cause of mental retardation in the child. The result showed that there is a significant relationship between age of mother of mentally retarded child and the cause of mental retardation in the child. The analysis of this hypothesis gave, a calculated r-value of 0.38 against a critical value of 0.28 at 0.05 level of significant. This implies, there is a positive significant relationship between age of the mother and the cause of mental retardation in the child.

Hypothesis Two: There is no significant relationship between drug intake of the mother of the mentally retarded and the cause of mental retarded and the cause of mental retardation is the child. The analysis of this hypothesis gave a r-calculated value of –0.84 which is beyond the critical region of –0.25 to 0.25. This implies that there is a negative relationship between drug intake of mother and the cause of mental retardation in the child. This negative relationship implies that drug intake of the mother cause of mental retardation in the child.

Hypothesis Three: There is no significant relationship between exposures of mother to x-ray radiation during pregnancy and the cause of mental retardation in the child. The result of finding revealed that mother to x-ray radiation has negative relationship with the cause of mental retardation in the child. A result that gave a calculated r-value of –0.58 which is beyond the critical region of –0.25 to 0.25 at 0.05 level of significant. The negative relationship implies that, x-ray radiation causes mental retardation in a child.

Hypothesis Four: There is no significant relationship between prolonged labour of the mother of the mental retardation and the cause of mental retardation in the child. The result of finding revealed that there is no significant relationship. The analysis of this hypothesis gave a calculated r-value of 0.13 against the critical region of –0.25 to 0.25 at 0.05 level of significant. The analysis showed that the r-calculated is within the acceptable region (critical region), thus there is no significant relationship between prolonged labour and mental retardation in the child. This means that prolonged labour does not cause mental retardation in the child

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1   Background of Study

Mental retardation is a common problem all over the world, through history mental retardation has attracted a lot of attention some of it negative. (Awa 2000), the early Chinese, Romans, Greeks, Babylonian and Hebrews, unable to understand the condition, attributed it is Demonic influences and subjected the mentally retarded to harsh treatment such as flogging, starving etc. These were done in a bid to punish the demon within and to cure the patient. It was not until the 18th century that there was a change in attitude toward the mentally retarded and the first attempt was by Jean Marc Itard, to educate a mentally retarded, (Adu 2002).
