CHAPTER ONE

1.0       Introduction

1.1       Background of the Study

Socio-economic background of any person simply means the level of affluence (wealth) that will make him to render affective home service, which is educating the children and their financial support and so no Ezewu 1993).

Socio-economic background of the family always relate with the academic performance and the success of the student.

Jakubbowski and Debo (2002) found out that socio-economic background was positively related to academic performance of student. Matine (1996) identified the importance of parental influence on academic performance of children. This meant that there could be link between family background and academic performance of student.

Agulanna and Nwachuku (2001) confirmed that students’ socio-economic background is likely to have a significant effect on the attitudes and behaviours of children in schools. All these are indications that parents educational socio and economic background may likely effect the academic performance of students in their studies.

In most cases, most of the students that performed brilliantly well must have received some motivation from their parent.

Also, Mod’dNazih (1984) also observed that rich family environment is when a child is exposed to a good and conducive atmosphere. This is a family of well to do people. The high income and part of medium income groups fall within this category, they have influence in thesociety and have all the opportunity to assist their children to achievable height of successful academic performance. As far as one would agrees, there are still some family who are well to do financially okay, but whose children do not still do well academically.

Also family type may determine the academic performance of the student especially in polygamous family, if the income of the family is less than the people in the family, this may affect the academic performance of the children in such family.

Also, some family are financially buoyant but academically bankrupt. Some of the children that perform well in schools were verbally interview and the outcomes is that there are a lot of infrastructure in their homes which made them to do so. The infrastructure may not have being provided if not due to the social learning of the family as well their high economic background backed up with enough assistance.

Also, most of such family are still able to employ the services of private teachers who conduct coaching classes for their children after school hours in addition, to the earlier mentioned infrastructure provided for private education of children some children of the rich family have been known to be sent overseas for better education in a better environment and most of them have been known to do well academically due to in which they fund themselves. This was made possible because of the socio-economic background of the family they belong to, not many family are able to offered this type of step.
