HEALTH EDUCATION FOR THE ELDERLY: A SENIOR HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAM

This article reports a model for the preparation of gerontologists and health workers concerned about increasing cooperation and understanding between these professions. The project discussed entailed the cooperative efforts of the Oregon State University gerontology program and Department of Health, a tricounty area agency on aging, and community health professionals. Major benefits resulting from the project were: (1) making health information and materials available to the aged, and (2) giving university students the opportunity to interact with participants at meal sites and senior centers. A basic program format evolved after specific health concerns were identified. Teams of students, a community health major, and a gerontology trainee developed health education material on the topics of hypertension, over‐the‐counter nonprescription drugs, hearing, and colds and influenza.
