ABSTRACT

The purpose for undertaken this research work is to examine the historical survey of Gospel Music in Abeokuta. A case study of St. Peter Cathedral Church Ake, Abeokuta. The study looks into the genesis of gospel music in Abeokuta, this project work is undertaken purposely to let people known the root of gospel music must especially the Christians. The research work examined the types, uses and the impact of music in our society. However, the researcher observed that church service without music is incomplete, however for the service to be complete we must include music to our various church service, the research explained what brings about gospel music in Nigeria, the father of gospel music in Nigeria and the first composer in Abeokuta.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0   BACKGROUND OF STUDY

The study deals with an historical survey of Gospel Music in Abeokuta. It discuss what gospel means, music is an aesthetic art. It has bias for history; tracing the past with a view to understanding the present. It equally deals with emotions (human psychology). It is a subject that soothes the mind and charts its graph in the progressive direction, growth wise. Linguistically, music is said to be language that fosters peaceful co-habiting/existence.

By scope, music is a performing art that is closely related to the visual and the creative arts. Hence every human being, no matter one’s handicap, benefits from the art. The blind listen to music and enjoy the beautiful sounds of the voice, the drums and the other instrument; even though he’s handicapped visually. While the deaf enjoy the visuals, but have difficulty listening to the sounds. The physically handicapped e.g the lame, though may have problems of dancing or taking active part in the performance, but still benefits from the visuals and the audio.
