HOTEL EMPLOYEE SALARY PAYMENT SYSTEM (A CASE STUDY OF ANIBETO HOTEL, IKOT EKPENE)

ABSTRACT

This research work is focused on hotel salary payment system for employees hotel industry using Anibeto Hotel in Ikot Ekpene as a case study. A salary payment information system is an automated system that is used to keep record of salary payment information for easy update and retrieval for quick decision making. The study was necessary because of the problems of the existing system such as: poor record keeping of salary payment information, absence of an automated system to process salary payment information, reports about salary payment information cannot be instantly retrieved. In view of these problems, the specific objectives are to develop a system that can be used to register employees salary payment information, to create a system that facilitates easy updating of salary payment information and to develop a system that can be used to view reports of salary payment history of employees. The significance of the study is that it will provide a more effective and efficient system capturing and computation of salary payment records. It will aid easy retrieval of needed information pertaining to salary payment. The programming language used is Visual BASIC 6.0 and the database used is Microsoft Access.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.0 Introduction

This chapter presents the introduction to hotel employee salary payment system. It also presents background of the study, statement of the problem, aim and objectives of the study, significance of the study, scope of the study, organization of the research and definition of terms.

1.1 Background of the Study

Anibeto Hotel is a hospitality industry that provides accommodation, meals and other services for travellers, tourists and other guests. The existing system of managing salary payment information in Anibeto Hotel is by using pen and booklet to record salary payment details of employees. With computers now driving virtually all business activities, salary payment system is one of such systems that make it easy for organizations to perform salary payment related information in electronic format as opposed to the manual method. For many businesses, especially service companies, labor costs comprise the largest part of operating expenses. Many labor costs are a result of various complex government regulations, and thus, the salary payment accounting system can be quite complex.  First of all, it is important to distinguish between employees and contractors as payroll accounting applies only to employees of an organization (Adetifa, Ajilieye and Oluwasanmi, 2011).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The specific problems identified are:

  1. Poor record keeping of salary payment information.
  2. Absence of an automated system to process salary payment information.
  3. Salary payment information cannot be instantly retrieved.

With the advances in information technology that exist at the moment, a salary payment system can be created to help overcome the weaknesses of the manual system.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to develop a hotel employee salary payment system. The specific objectives are:

  • To design a system that can be used to register employee salary payment information.
  • To create a system that facilitates easy updating of salary payment information.
  • To design a system that can be used to view reports of salary payment history of employees.
