So today, we’re going to tell you how to reference an assignment.

First, you need to know that there are many ways to reference an assignment, and you must make sure that you follow the way that’s expected by your school, college, or university. In this article, we will use the American Psychological Association, (APA) style of referencing.

So what is Referencing?

Referencing is when you acknowledge the sources of information you use in your assignment. The sources can be websites, books, journals, newspaper articles, anything that you use for your assignment. Throughout your assignment, you will need to reference your sources. This is called in text citation.

There are two types of in text citation direct and indirect.

Direct citation uses the exact words from the source. When you copy the exact word, you place double quotation marks around the text to indicate that it has been copied directly. Example;

“According to a lot. More than 70% of China’s rivers and lakes are polluted, and almost half may contain water that is unfit for human consumption.”

Indirect citation paraphrases the information, meaning that you put the information in your own words, Example;

There were 6.5 million deaths related to air pollution in 2012, making it the fourth largest killer behind high blood pressure, dietary risk and smoking. (www.modishproject.com)

Therefore, your in text citation is placed at the end of the sentence in brackets with the author’s surname, followed by the year of publication.

Specific ideas and direct quotes require a page number when possible.

At the end of your assignment, you must include a reference list on a separate page.

Add the title references at the top of the page. This list will provide all the information of the sources you have referenced in the assignment. The list must be in alphabetical order, according to the author’s surname.

If there are two sources from the same author, put the source first on the list.

The author or editors name goes first, followed by the year of publication in brackets.

The title of the article, book or film is written next, followed by the publisher.

For web pages, the URL link must be added with the date you accessed this site.
