ABSTRACT

The study examined Office Technology training on Eradication of quest for white collar job. Three research hypothesis were formulated for the study. Ex-post facto research design was considered appropriate for the study. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 40 secretaries out of 59. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire titled “office technology training on eradication of quest for white collar job”. The validity of the instrument was ascertained by two experts in research methodology. Data from 40 completed questionnaire were used for data analysis. The hypotheses were tested with chi-square statistics. The finding eradicate quest for white collar job. Recommendations were made that internet services should be a core course for all the students in office technology and management.

Background of the study

Office technology is a profession and is remarkable for its vast and embraces nature, office technology graduate can easily gain employment into either self-employment, public service, private sector employment or educationally related employment since their curriculum include administration and management. Nigeria is a rapidly developing nation with an increasing demand for skilled manpower, many job opportunities are available for office technology graduates, the public and civil service, media service, industrial set-up, banking and finance industries and self-employment. Most recently, business have developed word processing centers and relied on personnal computers and even electronic mail in an effort to lesson the need for office support and make the employee very productive (Ezoem, 1995 and Osuala, 2004). Edwin, (1998) office technology training means to equip an individual for vocation and it is systematic practice in the performance of skill jobs such as word processing ICT based job etc. the training qualified office technologist in only polytechnic setting. The training is done in two tier system, since the four years system did not expose students to industrial work experience. The two tier system is a kind of functional training, which ensure that during the first two years in National diploma (ND) students are training to developed both office skills and office technology skills. The result of changes in technology, the secretaries in office technology has changed tremendously from that of typewriting and shorthand dictations, answering of telephone calls and processing of mails. Today’s secretaries are exposed to more office training including the Internet that make work much easier and knowledge more accessible. (Duck and Fielden, 1999). Office technology training is dynamic and also produce useful model secretaries in the labor market. In this regard, needs for the society are suppose to be met in preparing secretaries that would be job creators than job seekers. Office technology training is a course in business education, which is component of vocational education. Office technologist are those staff in any organization that are trained in office administration, equipped with relevant secretarial skills and component to function in the use of office machines, transcription, reception, communication and others. Word processing with multiple purpose facilities, computers and other sophisticated office machines and equipment are now provide by employers. New technological equipment that has altered the procedures and techniques for office functions include the computers, electronic mail/commerce voice mail and the internet (Lucas, 1997). Office trainees now a-days have many technological advanced office gadget to ease their jobs or any task that enhance proficiency and productivity leading to improved access to good and service globally. The advent of the word processor has helped to make office trainee career path cleaner. An office skills of typewriting and shorthand with a consequence of the industrial revolution to asserted the based on the office and the introduction of the office technology produced faster with the professional touch, office trainees are also able to concentrate on a more creative task with present experienced secretary assisting them. (Akpome, 2003; Anyakoha, 2002 and wofershohn, 2001). Statement of the Problem Employment opportunities are increasingly become slimmer and more difficult to come by now a days consequently, the office technology training should be geared toward provising capacity on eradication of quest for white collar job. Therefore, the study is carried out to assertion office technology training and it capacity to eradicate quest for white collar job, also to know how word processing and internet service can add positive values equipped graduate of this training programme with appropriate knowledge and skills.

Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of the study was to determine how office technology training eradicate quest for white collar job, and the objective of the were as follows: To determine how word processing eradicate quest for white collar job in Uyo Local Government Area. To examine how internet eradicate quest for white collar job in Uyo Local Government area. To examine how desktop publishing eradicate quest for white collar job in Uyo Local Government Area. Research Questions How does word processing eradicate quest for white collar job in Uyo Local Government Area? How does internet services eradicate quest for white collar job in Uyo Local Government Area? How does desktop publishing eradicate quest for collar job in Uyo government Area? Significance of the Study The study will be of benefits to applicants (graduates) office technology and management students seeking for job to have knowledge the programme of job creation oriented type. The study will serve as a bearing which future researchers can develop their research in office technology.
