INFLUENCE OF PLANET RADIO PROGRAMMES PRESENTERS ON FEMALE STUDENTS OF UYO CITY POLYTECHNIC

CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

  • Introduction

The essence of establishing radio out fit is to enhance commucnaiton effectiveness and the aim of it is by providing information, education, entertainment and socialization. Radio can be used as a source of entertainment through arts and cultural festivals, musicals and dramatic performance. influence of planet radio programmes presenters on female students has had a greater impact which aids socializing then people. Radio as a medium of mobilization links people to the area of important events.

Radio programme presenters has had impact on female listeners, this is possibly seen by the way of speaking, pronunciation of words etc. radio on his capacity is portable, and some radio sets, like the walkman, are small and personal. Others, like the boom box, are big and public. No matter their size, radio sets are easily transported and go everywhere. The beach, sporting events, jogging trial, the work place. Car radios provide news and entertainment to commuters on their way to and from work. In fact it is hard to find a place where radio cannot go. Fairchild notes, that the notes, that the corporatist view has been the dominant model in recent radio operations. Research done in 2006 disclosed that time spent listening to radio among 12- 17 year olds had decreased more than 20  percent. Since 1993, most radio station target the 18-49 year old age group because this age group is the one that programme presenters want.

Radio as a medium of commucnaiton is useful ion socializing the people because use it shapes attitudes, perceptions and beliefs and is done through transmission of message for better change. Programme presented on any Fm station mostly when it concern styles, fashions are likely to attract female listeners, because it entice attention catching. Also, attitude and behavior can as well as be change due to the way the presenters of the programme pronounce words, their intonation, and with the use of vocabularies during presentation.

Millions rely on hourly newscast to keep up to date. Also that, people develops personal attachments to their favorite presenters. Radio has mote than survived. It has prospered by changing the nature of its relationship with its audiences. To this end, the cost of buying radio is less expensive than television medium of communication. The cheapness in the price of buying radio set encouraged the rate of radio programme listeners, as the study seeks to determine influence of planet radio programmes presenters on female students of Uyo City Polytechnic.

Electronic media generally, according to Asemah (2011), provide the public with information. Radio serves as watchdog and do not abuse power. According to Salama, (1978), notes that radio serve as an opinion leader in its news comment an editorial. It mirrors the society in programmes like drama that present issues relevant to the listeners in action which creates easy understanding and learning.

Radio has been used to promote  and support the cause  for nature holding and to this end, Moemaka (1985) remarks that a local broadcast media like planet radio 101.1 Fm, if managed well, operated well, will  provide a continuous flow of educational information  on all aspects that  will effect change in the perception of female listeners.

Wigwe (1988, P. 115) while writing on development communication says: The key role assigned to radio is to inform, educate enlighten and entertain the rural mobilization and the responsibility of making  attainable enlightenment and aspiration of the rural populace. Towards this end, the mass media support service should therefore promote dialogue between the designers of rural development process and programmes. They will mirror to each group in a relentless manner, the programmes that have been implemented, how it has been accepted, its short coming, means of improvement and the reaction of the beneficiaries.

All these supported the view that radio appealed to both illiterate and illiterate audiences make radio the most effective channel of information dissemination at the grassroots level in Nigeria. Tafida (1986), cited in Asemah (2011), broadcasting (radio) is so powerful; it brings political, economic and social news to any community or any group of communities. Adaba (1987) in the same vain, cited in Asemah (2011) argues further that there is an essential commucnaiton role for radio broadcasting at the local level.

According to Asemah (2011), of the mass media generally available to Africans, radio is the most widespread and accessible. And because of its special qualities, radio can be a major force in bring about national development that is to any quantitative and qualitative improvements in the lives of the people. Radio just like television is a tool that can be used to bring about positive attitudinal change in the audience. Radio helps to achieve development, both in rural & urban areas.

Radio can be employed to pass vital information about attitude, behavior, knowledge, techniques and skills, which are expected from the members of the public. Radio has been found to be one of the most effective media of transforming a hitter-to under-developed society to a developed polity. Ojebode (2003) concurs when he says that with few years of its emergencies, radio has metamorphosed form being an object of private concern to a political and development instrument in the hands of governments and Non Governmental organizations (NGOs).

 

  • Statement of the Problem

A good understanding of people’s culture, religion, and educational background including the demographic variables of the people are needed when presenting radio programmes. It is not easy to change the pattern of female radio listeners mostly, when they have acquainted themselves with styles and fashions. Radio programme presenters have had affects on female student listeners. This could be positive or negative. In the light of the above the study intends to investigate the influence of planet radio programme presenters on female students of Uyo City Polytechnic.

 

  • Objectives of the Study

The study aim to:

  1. Determine whether female students of uyo city polytechnic are aware of the programmes presented on planet radio
  2. Determine whether they listen to them or not
  3. Determine how they perceive the programmes on planet radio fm
  4. Find out how the progrmames affect their attitudes and behavior.

 

  • Research Questions

Research question formulated to guide the study were:

  1. Are female students of UCP aware of the programme presented on planet radio?
  2. Do they listen to them or not?
