INFLUENCE OF SATELLITE TELEVISION VIEWERSHIP AMONG RESIDENTS OF UKANAFUN URBAN 

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background of The Study

It is quite difficult to ignore the influence of satellite television over the residents of Ukanafun Urban because it is often said that satellite television programmes have it terms, our manner of relating with people and over decision about the expenditure of our wealth.

The modern era of communication involves the use of satellites television that was first cited in America, France, England in the year 1962, 10 July, presently the media pacifically television stations make use of satellite television for most of their programmes which gives viewers alternative to select channels.

Ukanafun urban residents have not been left behind in this growing desire to own a  subsection television. Viewers wants to pay, to be able to have a view of their favorite station like movies, sport and other well meaning programme of their choice.

Satelite television (Channels) which occupied a central position in international communication especially in third world country came to existing when an America media established cable News Network (CNN) as a satellite television programmes, followed by British Broadcasting cooperation (BBC), Al Jazzera etc.

Satellite is designed in a manner that will attract television broadcasting station across the world to have a view of immediate happening around them. Super stationing and network has controlled the way most satellite place programme in order to satisfy their teaming viewers.

In Nigerian, television broadcasting develop along regional line first was in 1959 when the Western Nigeria Television (W.N.T.V) was established by the Western Regional Government in Ibadan in (1989).

In the year 2000 there were two private owned satellite television stations in Nigeria, which were African Independent Television (AIT) and Minaj Broadcasting International (MBI).

However, television stations along side with coloured T.V the cable system now a common sight among resident in Ukanafun urban. This satellite T.V. programmes usually convey the life style of the western country satellite television programmes of western background as seen in practically every country where television stations look to this foreign it is in questionable that one of the most remarkable phenomenon about the 12th century is the widespread diffusion and the economic as well as culture of developing country such as Nigeria.

 

1.2       Statement of Problem

Resident of Ukanafun urban have found themselves in the of increasing subscribers to satellite television.

This is a problem because as they go crazy to associate with attitudes of this foreign  music and movies stars in way of dressing relating with other people as they have been greatly influenced by way of subscribing and watching this foreign T.V. programmes.

Another problem is that some of the programmes on this satellite television corrupt the children which are not age to watch channels because when they  start practicing they see it will be difficult to change from the behaviour that they have been mastered with.

 

  • Objectives Of The Study

This study has been following objectives.

  1. To assess the influence of satellite T.V. on the social behaviour of Ukanafun urban.
  2. To assess the effect of satellite television programmes on local T.V. stations.
  3. To assess the relationship between main exposure to satellite T.V. programmes and their desire to immigrate to state and other European countries.
  4. To make recommendation based on finding of the research.

The following questions are raised in this research.

  1. How does satellite T.V. programmes influence the social behaviour of Ukanafun urban?
  2. What are the effects of satellite television programmes on local T.V stations?
  3. What are the relationship between main exposure to satellite T.V programmes and their desire to immigrate to state and other European countries?
  4. What was the recommendation made based on findings of the research?

 

  • Scope Of The Study

This study especially focuses on resident of Ukanafun urban and only those that owns and sub-scribe to satellite T.V. It is on the influence of satellite television programmes only.

 

  • Significance Of The Study

This research is significance for the following reasons:

This research will help serve as a guide for further work on this topic to other researchers.

The outcome will help serve as a framework for improved broadcasting among our local stations.
