CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

A field report is an article which gives a brief overview of experience, events, ideas and information of geological importance encountered during each field exercise. It is compiled in order to give readers and subsequent explorers a general idea of the geology of the study area.

The 2016/2017 academic session field exercise started on 23rd November 2017 to 17th December 2017 and last for about 4 weeks. The mapped area Aningeje and it’s environs which I mapped is located between latitudes 050081011 – 050111011Nand longitudes 00803110011 – 00803610011E cover areas such as Aningeje, kwa falls, Ndingane, Camp 1, Camp 2, Camp 3 and road 6. These sub-regions lies along the rainforest belt of Southern Cross River State, Nigeria.

The study area consists mostly of metamorphic rocks such as Schist and Gneiss as well as associated igneous rocks such as pegmatite and quartz veins.

Also encountered during this field exercise were numerous features of great geologic significance which could be highlighted, discussed and further elaborated in subsequent chapters of this work.

1.1   AIMS AND OBJECTIVE

i.     The aim of this field mapping was to provide the students with the practical experience in both principles and methods of geologic mapping and interpretation of data collected from the mapped area.

ii.    It afforded the opportunity to put into practice the uses and observed study of various rock types with their associated field, petrographic and structural features.

iii.   To produce a representative map of the mapped area containing all geologic structures, orientation and rock types.

iv.   The exercise form part of the basis of partial fulfillment of the requirement of award of a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) Degree in Geology in University of  Calabar, Calabar.

1.2     LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITY OF THE STUDY AREA

Location:

The study area Aningeje and its environs which situates at the South-Eastern part of Cross River State, Nigeria, is predominantly a rain forest region. It is located in Akamkpa local  Government Area between latitudes 050081011 – 050111011N and longitudes 00803110011 – 00803610011E (Fig. 1).

The Aningeje environs are linked together via a major high way from Calabar through this region towards the Nigerian/Cameroon border. Hence making transportation through this area convenient enough.
