CHAPTER ONE

Introduction

1.1   Background of the Study

The word “environment” according to Essien (2005) is the global skin or envelop that sustains all sorts of life. And parts of our immediate environment where we live or spent most of our time are our homes, schools, churches, market square etc. as specifically related to this study, consideration will be on the school environment.

Looking at the school setting from a formal point of view, it is known that there are specifications outlined in order to achieve the objectives of study up the school. Starting from seven 0’ clock in the morning of every school day, some parents find it difficult to feed their wards before dropping them in school and do buy some sorts of snacks with packets for them so as to eat hereafter by break time. These empty packs and many other unwanted objects do contributes to what is termed waste in our school environment.

The NTI (1990) NCE / DLS Curse book sees solid waste as “materials found in homes, schools, factories and industries. There include paper, cardboard, rags, metallic objects, tins, plastic, glass, unwanted food etc. the regular spreading of these above  object in our school compound makes it uncondusive for learning to take place. Attempt to control these waste material had lead to the provision of waste baskets at some points in our school playground, classrooms and in staff office.

But since this study is carried out to investigate into the attitude of secondary school students on how to manage the waste they produce on the ones found in their school. The researcher selected schools in Onna Local Government Area and link same with that of what other researchers had done before now.

1.2   Statement of Problem

It is a well known fact that in a normal school setting there should be a waste paper basket in every classroom and at some points of the playground. But the question in our minds is suppose to be, do our students rightfully make good use of the waste basket and bins in their possession? If they do, why do we still have waste littered round our school compounds during and after school everyday. It is here and now that we will really understand what has being going on in our school. It is a fact that student no longer have self discipline as imparted into them from their homes by their parents student are not all that conscious as they should have been and will not always remember to drop whatever is in their hand being unwanted in the waste paper basket or dust bin in their possession. Since the researcher has personally observed this, in her quest to contribute to a health learning environment, a dose examination of the situation of waste management has been embarked on in secondary schools in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
