ABSTRACT

This study, “Linguistic Innovation on Selected Facebook Posts”, examined the syntactic expression/constructions, the elements/features of language use in social media specifically the Facebook. The framework for this study was drawn from the equivalence constraints by Poplack and Systemic Functional Grammar by Halliday (SFG). This study use relevant aspect of the theory to interrogate the syntactic structures and language variations of Facebook users in Nigeria. Ten posts from different Facebook users were collected and analysed syntactically. The analysis revealed a predominate occurrence of simple declarative/interrogative sentences, main clauses and nominal group of words. These pointed to the fact that the language of Facebook is conversational and probing because the users want to obtain information from the readers. And this to be achieved within space and time recommended further investigation of the post may account for obscured cases of code-switching and code-mixing
