According to John Dewey (2010) emphasized that communication is a basic human need and for that reason, man has always found a means of meeting this need. The media which is an umbrella term for various means of communication has become an integral part of human life around the world. The weaknesses of not being able to communicate to large audience led to the development of mass media, such as writing. Mass media refers to channels, instrument used in reaching a large audience or it is a transmission and acquisition of educational knowledge, skills, ideals or information directed at large populations. These channels includes books and publishing houses, newspaper, magazines and their establishment, audio and video clips and their producers, popular music, radio, television and the world wide web (www). Dominic (1977) view that mass media is a form of electronic communication which facilitated interaction based on certain interests and characteristics. Mass media have also gained considerable attention from the academic and business worlds. This innovation becomes most desirable to fulfill the educational goals of communication order than information and entertainment goals. It must also be noted that education can hardly take place without a means of communication either directly or indirectly, personal or massively. This is why the mass media must massively be employed to facilitate educational and vocational development. Therefore, adolescence needs such innovations programme which must stress on values, interest, skills, information gathering and decision making to overcome the problem they face in the school to work transition Black (1985) developed these. Mass media education is therefore desirable for Office Technology and Management prospective students, it will help them in their career planning and decision making. Hence, students’ academic performance has always been a topic of interest for educations because when emphasized on it always and always it will help or motivate the students to sit up on their studies and for that, their performance will be higher and great. Mass media play important roles in the life of masses in particular the society in general. Desmond Wilson (1997) agrees that the role of the mass media in the society is to inform, educate and entertain the people. According to Fakac (2005) and Udoh (2010) expressed that the current trend and development in vocational and technical education in Nigerian of which Office Technology and Management is a part, is that it is institutional inefficiency and inability to train, develop and produce skillful, employable and self employable products have various been expressed. The factors of poor fundings, poor infrastructural base and student’s laziness as challenges that hinder the success of vocational and Office Technology education. Besides, there has always been poor registration of students in the Department of Office Technology and Management in some polytechnic in Nigeria. People are worried about the awareness about the value of this skill based course, hence, the study was conducted to ascertain how mass media contributes to students’ academic performance in Office Technology and Management.
