AN INVESTIGATION INTO MEN’S ATTITUDE TOWARDS FAMILY PLANNING ( EDUCATION PROJECT TOPICS AND MATERIALS)

 

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the attitude of men towards family planning, in Odeda Local Government area of Ogun State. This research work  looked into the interest of male counterparts in the issues of family planning and also examined the effects (both positive and negative) of family planning in the study areas The population of this work consists of 200 men in Odeda Local Government area of Ogun State, the sampling procedure involved a multi-stage random sampling technique that was used to select a total number of two hundred (200) men in the study area.; the first stage involved the purposive selection of Ogun State, while the second stage involved purposive selection of Odeda Local Government based on accessibility and proximity, the third stage involved selection of five(5) areas, in the fourth stage,40 men were randomly selected in each of the five(5) areas in order to get an unbiased sampling for this study. The data for this study was obtained using close ended questionnaire, the data was analyzed using frequency and percentage count, using SPSS for windows version 20.0.

The study revealed that more than half (56.6%) of the total number of respondents were Civil Servant, similarly (93.0%) of the respondents were married men, over 40% of the respondents were between the age range of 36-46 years and in terms of their educational qualification, it was affirmed that over 80% of the respondents had post-secondary education. More so, the result of this findings indicated that 96.5% of the respondent agreed that family planning is the planningo f when to have children and the use of birth control, in the same vein 61% of the men, expressed that the issue of family planning is majorly directed to women and it was also shown from the result of this study that most men disregarded vasectomy as a method of birth control because they believed that vasectomy increases the possibility of men developing cancer of testis and eventually, impotency. Finally, the study revealed that 46% of the respondent preferred to use condom as a method of birth control among twelve (12) other preferred methods while only 0.5% of the respondent accepted the use of vasectomy as a method of birth control. It was concluded that, family planning does more than help for women and men to  limit their family size. It safeguards individual health and right, preserves natural resources and can improve the economic outlook for families and the community. It was therefore recommended that mass media campaigns should be promoted to curb unintended pregnancies and promote use of birth control methods among men of reproductive age groups.
