CHAPTER ONE

     INTRODUCTION

1.1       BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

It has been widely observed that school discipline problems substantially changed through time. Disciplinary action which include taking with out permission being disruptive in class, running in the hall ways, or smoking or behind the gymasium.

Crime in school is therefore one of the most trouble some social problems in the national today. School crime are those anti social behaviours like stealing, truancy, disobedience, lying, thuggery and anti- social acts.

School crime can be referred to as state of disorder lines and inability to train one’s mind morally, physically and socially in accordance to the norms, values, attitude and regulation of such a community to which a person belongs these anti- social behaviour attitude like disloyalty, dis–honesty, disrespectfulness, cupidity etc crime are found in the people of various schools society motor park, films houses, hostels, commercial bank etc.

A student with such bad behaviours is always unable to make logical or reasonable decision which results to telling lies, lateness, cheating, fighting, truancy thuggery wickedness, abortion and other anti-social behaviour. School crime is a common problem in our country Nigeria and this affect the academic performance of student also cause fall in the standard of education in the county.

Usually school crime make student to appearritable, intensive, arrogant and restless. All these affect learning abilities which is due to child unpreparedness and unwillingness to learn thus, these have negative effects on the performance of junior secondary schools student.

School crime is multifaceted and encompasses a number of behaviours it could be culture, age and so on, peer models are likely to dominate not surprising ,the highest incident of aggression is found in communities and group in which aggressive models abound and fighting prowess is regarded as a valued attribute also mass medial including television movies, magazines newspaper and books provide additional symbolic model in victimization and the adoption of coping strategy  television  pervades the life of the growing child even the young child and offer potentially powerful, aggressive and models of victimization. Thus these have negative effect on the academic performance of the junior secondary school student.

1.2       STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM 

School crime is one of the major problem facing student not only their academic performance but also in the social interactions. It has been observed that trends at which its effect are spreading among our students needs to be addressed. Against this, this study will look at causes, effects, types, characteristic and outcome of school crime in junior secondary school.

1.3       SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY                                                                      

The study is very significant because it is intended to assist controlling reducting and eradicating crime among the student.

It will also look at the effects on children and what can be done to curb the menace in the society so that the country will be at peace and positive result can be achieved in the academic performance of student in junior secondary school.

It will also contribute positively to the development of educational system and modification of student’s behaviour in state and the nation as a whole.
