ABSTRACT

Qua Iboe River as a water body is a biogeochemical hot spot, because it receive large inputs of nutrients from land and adjoining stream to support high rates of metabolism and primary production. The dissolved oxygen concentration in the water column of the unperturbed area along Qua Iboe River at Ikot Osurua Station was analyzed using standard procedures. The result of DO obtained was multiply by 0.375 carbon equivalent gave the gross primary production (GPP), net primary production (NPP) and respiration (R). Station 1 recorded in gC/m2/day of 0.2625 GPP, 0.15 NPP, O.1125 R while station 2 had 0.4125 GPP, 0.2625 NPP, and 0.15 R and station 3 recorded 0.2625 GPP, 0.1125 NPP, 0.15 R with the overall mean total primary production for the three different stations as 0.9375 GPP, 0.525 NPP and 0.4125 R. The ichthyofauna solely depends on organic production of carbon for their sustenance in the river.
