ABSTRACT

The study focused on readers view of Newspaper coverage of drug abuse in Essien Udim. The main objectives of this study is to examine the content of newspaper the readers in Essien Udim read most, to find out how often they read Newspapers, to find out the type of Newspaper readers in Essien Udim read most and to find out if the content of the Newspaper informs them about drug abuse. The study employed a survey research design and adopted a simple random simple technique to select a sample of 360 respondents for the study. The primary sources of data collection was using the questionnaire of the instrument for data collection and out of 390 copies of questionnaire forms distributed, 360 were retrieved while thirty copies were not returned was used for the study. Individual difference theory was used for the study, Data collection were analyzed using simple percentage frequency table. Finding revealed that majority of people in Essien Udim are read the content of Newspaper very Often and majority of Essien Udim residents are read different types of newspaper highly. It was therefore recommended that The government should also ensure that teachers are trained on drug abuse so that they can give the public adequate and appropriate information on it, Media stakeholders should conduct aggressive campaigns to sensitize the public on drug abuse and its effects, different types of newspapers should try and cover more stories on drug abuse and  daily nation newspaper should also create a column on health like the standard and through this they will be able to educate many people on various drugs and their effects to the readers’ health just like how the standard newspaper has done.

INTRODUCTION

  1. Background of the study

A newspaper is defined as an unbound publication issued at regular intervals, which present information in words, often supplemented with pictures, (Sadman 1976 in Okunna and Omenugh, 2012). Newspaper carries information on a broad spectrum of issues which include: news, advertisement, politics, education, science and technology, religion, commerce, health etc. The average daily newspaper contains far more news than available in radio, television or any other medium (Alozie, 2009). Of all the print media, newspaper provide the most current information, newspaper are published either daily or weekly.
