ABSTRACT

This research work on “Reducing Unemployment Rate in Nigeria through agricultural development, using Fadama III in Akwa  Ibom State as a case study. To accomplish the research objectives, the study adopted the survey research design while the convenience sampling technique was used to select fifty (50) respondents as sample size for the study. The main instrument of the study was a self-developed questionnaire and the forms were personally administered. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics involving simple percentage and frequency tables. The study unveil that the roles of agricultural development in reducing unemployment  rate in Nigeria are; provision of income and profit, adequate supply of raw materials to industries, discouragement rate in Nigeria include, youth empowerment and vocational skills development; establishment and funding of agricultural development. And also the impact of Fadama III in alleviating poverty in Nigeria are; provision of support to upstream and providing downstream activities, advisory services for Fadama users group, provision of input, processing and storage facilities to farmers. The following recommendations if implemented will go a long way in reducing unemployment rate in Nigeria; the Fadama III programme must be properly funded so that it can improve on its project. Government should not involve in actual implementation of Fadama III programme, rather it should render technical and support services in the areas of adaptive research, agricultural extension, rural institution development, certified seeds/planting and very high breeds of finger fish for multiplication, distribution, strengthening indigenous capacities for agricultural planning, implementation and evaluation of required skills and knowledge. Â
