ABSTRACT
This study examined the revenue generation in the local government; an assessment of problems and prospects using Abak Local Government Council as a case study. The study adopted the survey research design while the convenience sample techniques were used to select fifty (50) respondents as the sample size of the study. The instrument for the study was a self employed questionnaire and the forms were personally administered. Findings from the study revealed that the challenges of revenue generation in the Local Government council include; corruption, fraud and misappropriate of generated revenue, lack of foresight and entrepreneurial skills, non-utilization of resources, inability of implementing bye-laws. The study revealed that the contribution of revenue generation to the local government are building of reception halls, establishment of local government banking services, mass transit transportation programmes, provision of basic infrastructure. The study also revealed that the sources of revenue generation available to local government are taxes, fines, rent, and property tax. While the strategies of enhancing revenue generation in the local government are proper accountability, recruitment and training of officers, investment in revenue yielding venture, identification of fines and taxes. It was therefore recommended that, the local government council authorities should consider better ways of motivating revenue staff such as promotion and compensation of revenue staff provision of basic infrastructure and building of reception halls to help them generate more revenue to the local government council through revenue drive.
