ABSTRACT

The study was examine on Secretarial Skills and Resourceful Leadership of Office Managers in Business Organization in Uyo Urban. Three research questions were developed for the study Ex-post factor research design was used for the study. The data for the study were collected through a structured questionnaire titled “Secretarial Skills and Resourceful Leadership of Office Manager in Business Organization Questionnaire (SSRLOMBOQ)” while simple random sampling technique was used to select 50 branch managers from banking institutions in Uyo Urban. The analysis of data was done with a simple percentage, the result of the analysis showed that word processing skill, communication skills and poor record management skills influences resourceful leadership of office managers in business organization Uyo Urban, it was also recommended that office managers should be exposed to high conceptual developments programmes through seminars training and conferences.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

In Uyo Urban there are many business organizations where secretarial skills of office system managers are very much required for the achievement of the objectives. Office manager is an employee of a business organization whose duties typically include allocation physical resources such as office space and supplies, scheduling internal events, overseeing operational staff such as accountants, technicians, and administrative personnel, and other details necessary to run business office well (business dictionary).

According to Njoku (2000), secretarial skills have embodied the ability to communicate, relate with other staff and process word, manager records for the achievement of work satisfaction. It is obvious that secretarial skills are the major tools through which office managers should use to ensure effective performance of their functions. Leadership is very essential to the success of any business organization, it has been recognized as one of the well-known tools used in modern management to incite workers to higher performance in service. Nkanga (2002), Nwosu stated that leaders act as pointers and songsters of a way out of a confused state. They added that leaders inspire others towards the achievement of a goal through maximum application of personal capabilities and qualities. In other words people are only said to be leaders to the extent that they succeed in their attempt to influence others. Leadership according to Flippo (1982) is a pattern of behaviour designed to integrate organizational and personal interests in pursuit of some objectives. Hollins (1971), defined leadership as the abilities to create ideas and instill into every member of the organization a sense of confidence, loyalty willingness, satisfaction and co-operation. He went further to add that the final proof of a group leader is the ability to handle people properly in all type of situation. A resourceful office manager is an effective leader. An effective leader is determined by the quality of organizational performance. Effective leadership is no doubt an essential ingredient an indispensable element in any result oriented business organization. Hicks and Gullet (1976), support this view when they noted that the successful, result oriented business organization has a major attribute that distinguishes it from an unsuccessful business organization and that is dynamic and effective leadership of office manager in business organization. A resourceful leadership according to Hodgetts and Altmain (1979) is a process of influence that activities of an individual or group effort towards goal achievement in a given situation from the various concepts given by different people, resourced leadership is an art that takes place in groups of two or more people and not frequently involves positively influencing the behaviour of a member of a groups as it relates to the group goal. The business organization is an individual or group of people that collaborate to achieve certain commercial goal. In which resourceful leadership of office manager is expected to define the duties and responsibilities of the personnel employed in the organization. The office managers should not merely be concerned with the duties and responsibilities of the organizational workers but also with the manner in which those duties and responsibilities are related and are being carried out office manager by their status are leaders, it is the duty of office manager in business organization to ensure that their leadership is resourceful through a good knowledge of secretarial skill which are communication, record management and information processing skills, etc. this skill will help the office manager of business organization to perform well on the job which in turn increase the quality and quantity of output. This research work sought to highlight the secretarial skill need of office manager and performance effectiveness in business organization in Uyo Urban.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

A resourceful office manager is an effective leader, an effective leader is determined by the quality of the organization performances, secretarial skills are those special expertise function performed by office manager. However there have been complaints of poor performance by office managers who are expected to use their skills resourcefully in the development and attainment of the organizational goals. Moreover various factors have been processing skills etc to mention but few, source scholars said that some office managers information and knowledge off this skills required for the running of business organization is limited, it is against this background that this research work is conducted to examine the secretarial skills and resourceful leadership of office manager in Business organization in Uyo Urban.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The major purpose of this study was to highlight secretarial skill and resourceful leadership of office manager in business organization. The specific objectives were to To determine how word processing skills influence resourceful leadership of office manager in business organization. To determine how communication skills influence resourceful leadership of office manager in business organization. To determine how record management skills influence resourceful leadership of office manager in business organization.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The finding of the study would assist office managers in business organization Uyo Urban to develop leadership through secretarial skills that would make them resourceful leaders. This work would influence their performance effectiveness and help them actualize her goals through resourceful leadership. Finally, the result of this study would increase the body of knowledge in related areas and contribute to the available research literature on secretarial skills and resourceful leadership of office manager in business organization.
